HP All-in-One Desktop PC 27-cb1000i (4N1Q9AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Almost since new, now 8 months old, this 17" all in one desktop HP PC-cb1000i unit has been overheating and temporarily freezing up, primarily when attempting to read  'news' programs.  Usually no problems while in email, or even with things like UTube videos - it just doesn't seem to like 'news' programs such ABC; NBC; FOX etc.  Have run all the diagnostic programs included in the PC and all reflect no issues.  ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS ON A FIX FOR THIS?   Thanks.

Alden4:  With the listing you provided me (above) - even though the PC is near new, I took it to the garage and did a through cleaning with the air compressor......as I expected, no sign of accumulated dust.  As to proper ventilation, the PC sits alone on the desk with only a printer....open on all sides.........no issue there. As to drivers and software updates, using the on board diagnostics, I updated all and ran all the software and hardware  checks....all reflected 'no issues found'.  Went into the power settings and selected to lowest power options available - went into startup apps - closed all but Intel Graphics and Windows Security.  As to adding cooling fans, this is a 27 in all in one PC with cooling vents at bottom and top..........I see no way to add any cooling pads or fans?  Despite checking and rechecking all of the above, this PC continues to freeze up with various online programs, such as previously mentioned.........about the only exceptions are email and Utube type videos.  THE ONLY THING, on your list, I've not yet attempted is resetting or reinstalling the operating system - having never  done something like that, I admit to being uneasy (at this time) trying that.   Never, with multiple PC over the years have I ever experienced such behavior from a PC......but I must say all previously have been tower units - yet all have been H/P brand.  At this moment I'm contemplating asking H/P to take this thing back and fix it?  I do thank you for your time attempting to help me resolve the problem.  I can't say we were successful, but for me it's been a big help.  Lee Anders

It's really interesting, I purchased two of these, same model, 4 months apart.  The other one, the second one purchased works perfectly, as it should - but this one, while working well with most projects, has this one problem that will not allow me to comfortably watch/read NEWS programs - without almost immediately overheating/freezing up and the fan running.  Once it cools it resumes operation but will repeat this problem as long as I am in NEWS feeds - once out of NEWS feeds, it resumes normal operation.  The NEWS feeds are a combination of such things as NBC; CBS; FOX; - etc.  This machine simply does not like those type feeds.  Aside from the frustration dealing with this matter is the concern that this overheating is not good for the machine!  I might note I have repeatedly ran all included technical functions and they all report 'normal' operation.  Any assistance  with this matter will be appreciated.....I'm a long time user of HP products and am surprised that this one unit is acting in this manner .  Thanks, Lee Anders.

Hi @leeanders,

Thank you for your response,

If your HP All-in-One Desktop PC 27 is overheating and freezing up, there are several potential causes and solutions you can try.

  • Check for dust and clean the vents: Over time, dust can accumulate in the vents and obstruct the airflow, leading to overheating. Shut down your computer, unplug it, and use compressed air or a soft brush to clean the vents and remove any dust or debris.
  • Ensure proper ventilation: Make sure the computer is placed in a well-ventilated area. Avoid blocking the vents with objects or placing the computer on surfaces that can trap heat, such as blankets or soft materials.
  • Update drivers and software: Outdated or incompatible drivers and software can sometimes cause overheating and freezing issues. Visit the HP website and download the latest drivers and updates for your specific model.
  • Check the power settings: Ensure that the power settings on your computer are appropriately configured. Open the Control Panel, go to "Power Options," and select a power plan that is balanced or optimized for performance. Avoid using high-performance mode if it's not necessary, as it can increase heat generation.
  • Run hardware diagnostics: HP provides built-in hardware diagnostic tools that can help identify any underlying hardware issues. Restart your computer and repeatedly press the F2 key (or Esc key) during startup to access the diagnostics menu. Run tests for the CPU, memory, and hard drive to check for any errors.
  • Consider using a cooling pad: If the above steps don't resolve the issue, you can try using a cooling pad. These are portable devices with built-in fans that help improve airflow and keep your computer cool.
  • Monitor CPU and GPU temperatures: Install a temperature monitoring software like HWMonitor or Core Temp to monitor the temperatures of your CPU and GPU. If you notice excessively high temperatures, it might indicate a cooling problem or faulty hardware, and you may need to contact HP support for further assistance.
  • Reset or reinstall the operating system: If all else fails, you can try resetting or reinstalling the operating system. This will help eliminate any software-related issues that could be causing the overheating and freezing problems. Remember to back up your important files before performing a reset or reinstallation.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Alden4 - Thank you for the recommendations.  I've just printed the list and will be working it.  Some of the recommendations I've already completed, such as onboard hardware diagnostics, but will follow your list from top to bottom and will then get back to you for a follow up.  Appreciate it!    Lee
