HP Envy 17-J130ea
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

After Bios Update SP86702 in early April my HP Envy 17-J130ea is completely unusable, it will not boot up,  screen freezes with " Automatic Repair" on it, have fitted new Hard drive and tried putting a completely new version of windows 10  on it from either DVD or USB but computer still freezes and just hangs with writing on screen saying "Setup is Starting" its absolutely hopeless.

Sad thing is it was working lovely before the HP Support Assistant came up with an important upgrade, which was the BIOS Upgrade SP 86702.

Have tried HP and they no help and don't want to know.

Any Help would be greatly Appreciated as I think the Bios is now corrupted, which means the computer is probably scrap.

@Bert34,

Thanks for engaging in HP support Forums! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips!

reviewed the post regarding the notebook not booting after a bios update.I will be delighted to assist you here.

Splendid description, brilliant troubleshooting and great observations made before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂

For providing you with an accurate response I would require more information regarding this.

  • Did you try the other step by downloading the bios recovery to a USB flash drive and trying to install it from the USB recovery media?

Start with a hard reset to release any excessive static on the PC:

Many startup errors and other problems can be resolved by decreasing the amount of power stored in hardware components. Decreasing stored power is sometimes referred to as a "Hard Reset". Use the following steps to perform a hard reset on a computer:

  1. If Windows is open, click Start and then Shutdown.

If Windows is not open and the computer has power, press and hold the power button on the computer until the computer shuts off.

  2. With the power off, disconnect the power cord from the back of the computer.

  3. With the power off and the power cord disconnected, press the power button on the computer for 5 seconds. The power light indicator on or near the power button might turn on briefly but then go out.

  4. Reconnect the power cord and turn on the power.

Attempt to reset or recover the existing BIOS (if the recent update was interrupted): Click here

Step 1: Verify the current BIOS version installed and the correct ROM Family SSID for your PC

Step 2: Find the BIOS updates

Step 3: Download and install the BIOS update

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!

Eagerly waiting for your response!

I hope you have a good day ahead,

Hello Jeet and thank you for your help, have tried holding down the windows and "B" keys at the same time and I get the white Bios screen for a second or two, then the computer shuts down.

I have been back on the driver update website to down load the latest BIOS update and am amazed that they have removed SP86702 and downloaded SP82482 which is dated November 3 2017.

Have made a recovery Flash drive with SP82482 and will have a go with that and let you know the out come.

Many Thanks Again.

Appreciated.

Hello Bert34! You can try to solve your problem. In case you can download windows, you can try to rebuild the BIOS from under Windows. Here's the bios of F.71 (sp86702) I have it working for HP ENVY 17 j-125sr excellent. If any questions arise I will be happy to help you with the USB key v. 4.0.0.0 of recovering HP with BIOS F.71 !!!, if you can not update the BIOS from Windows.

Hello Jeet, have made a Bios recovery flash drive with SP82482, which is the latest bios upgrade dated Nov 2017, funny how they have removed the offending one which was used in early April by the HP Support Assistant dated March 2018, Bios upgrade SP86702.

However since the flash drive has been plugged in and the windows key and "B" held down as well as the power button for three seconds, mainly the power light comes on with screen not lit and will just sit there for ages like that, another time "Preparing Automatic Repair" will come on and sometimes go straight off and another time sit there with that on the screen for a while with the dots going around in a circle.

Cannot get the HP Bios Update screen on at all, have tried many, many times.

Many Thanks for your suggestions and time really appreciated, this is all since the HP Support Assistant tried to update the Bios in early April with the March 2018 update SP86702 F.71.

Thanks again for your time and trouble.

Yours Sincerely

@Bert34,

I am the The_Fossette. It looks like you were interacting with @Jeet_singh, but he is out of the office today so I'll take over from here.

I would like to know whether the bios update SP86702 was successfully installed on your computer?

Meanwhile, I recommend you try using Windows key + V and check whether you boot to the bios recovery screen.

NOTE: Turn off your computer and then hold the Windows key + V and then start the computer. Keep pressing these keys for 10 seconds after powering on the computer and then wait for a minute to boot the bios recovery screen.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

Cheers!

Hello, Bert34. Please read this manual carefully, it will help you to restore your laptop. If the breakdown occurred as a result of the upgrade to the new BIOS, we will deal with it, because some of them have already been stitched on the SPI flash drive of your laptop. 1.To start downloading the USB key 4 to 1. Link: http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp86501-87000/sp86807.exe 2. Start and make a USB key on another laptop or PC. 3. When the USB key is created, you need to go to the flash drive key in the BIOS folder and delete the old BIOS files F.65 (01961; 01961 sig; 01968; 01968 sig) 4. Next, you need to copy the files of the new BIOS F.71 (01961, 01961 sig; 01968; 01968 sig) to the BIOS folder on the USB key. Take these new BIOS files from here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1M-1u2l0WZcTRWJ1kzJpVB3HR_ba1JRp1/view?usp=drivesdk    5. Next you need to boot from the created USB key. IMPORTANT !!! Insert the USB key, turn on the laptop and quickly press the F2 key. 6. After downloading from the USB key, enter any agent code for example 111 and region code 222. 7.Click the software update and select file 01961 or 01968 from the list. 8.Wait the end of the update procedure thanks to the prompts on the screen.

Hello The Fossette, SP86702 was not completely installed, it was after this had tried to install via HP Support Assistant that the computer became completely erratic and kept going into "Preparing Automatic Reapair" which of course it never does, repair that is.

Have tried holding the windows key and "B" key, also windows key and "V" key while also keeping power button pressed for three seconds, this does very little, mainly screen stays blank then cuts off after twenty seconds or can sit there with a blank screen for ages, very rarely the "Preparing Automatic Repair" comes on the screen with dots going around in a circle or you can get a second or two of the bios update screen with it at 1% then it switches off.

Have also made a Bios Recovery drive with SP82482 Vers F.70 which is the previous version to SP86702 F.71 the one that corrupted the BIOS, trying holding down the windows key and "B" key or "V"key but to no avail all that happens is the screen does not light and stays like that for twenty seconds or screen does not light and sits there for ages, very rarely again you may get the "Preparing Automatic Repair" sign for a while then switches off.

Any Help Would be Greatly Appreciated!

Many Thanks

Hello Bert34. Solve the problem really, if you carefully read the instructions. Since the problem arose after the update on the BIOS F.71 - you need to try to restore it! 1. You need to download USB key 4 in 1 http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp86501-87000/sp86807.exe 2. On another laptop or PC using an 8 GB flash drive make a USB key using the prompts on the screen. 3.Find the flash drive in the BIOS folder and delete the old BIOS F.65 files - be sure !!! Delete the following files (01961; 01966; 01961 sig; 01966 sig) 4.Download and get files with such names with BIOS F.71 https://drive.google.com/file/d/1M-1u2l0WZcTRWJ1kzJpVB3HR_ba1JRp1/view?usp=drivesdk 5.Copy the files of the new BIOS to the USB key in the BIOS folder. 6. Insert the USB key into the problem laptop, when switching on quickly press F2 and boot from it. 7. The agent number we write is any - for example 111, the region code is also any - for example 222. 8. Select the item to update the software (microcode) and point to the BIOS file 01961 or 01966. 9. Follow the prompts on the screen. 10. Done
