Hi,

I have recently installed some updates on the pc - the ones which naturally take place when you shutdown or restart your pc and upon restart, all of my files have disappeared.  There were no issues with the pc restarting - it did so in the usual timeframes and everything seems to work as it should.  However, my photos, videos, downloads and music folders are all now empty - despite no obvious reason as to why.  I would like to retrieve the pictures if possible due to the sentimental value of them.  What I have noticed is that in each of these folders, there is a notepad item which refers to "LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\windows.storage.dll,-21791" as if some sort of error has taken place.  Again, the pc updated without suggesting there was an issue - and restarted ok.  Can anyone please help?

Regards,

Greetings,

Welcome to the forum.

I am not a HP employee.

This is a very unusual situation. A Windows Update should not corrupt data.

You should immediately back up data to external media if you can recover to a restore point. This update will happen again and may cause the same problem.

I would try using a previous Windows restore point prior to the last batch of Windows updates.

Open Control Panel, System, System Protection,

Select System Restore. Select next.

Select a system restore point prior to the date this issue occurred, hopefully you will have restore options.

You could try Recuva Free (Link) or Google other file recovery options.

Regards
