HP Desktop
Microsoft Windows 11

I have a HP desktop i'm trying to fix. After I put the pin in and log in, a couple of seconds later it will auto go to the lock screen. I've had this happen within seconds of entering the pin, to 40 seconds. I have the auto off and auto lock set to never, and i'm pretty sure it is not overheating. I did find that restarting the computer will allow a couple more seconds. How can I fix this?

Hi @TDK5,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're dealing with an issue where your HP desktop is locking unexpectedly after you log in. Here are a few steps you can try to diagnose and fix the problem.

Check for Malware or Software Issues

  • Run a Full Virus Scan: Use your antivirus software to check for any malware that might be causing this issue.
  • Check for Suspicious Programs: Look for any programs running in the background that could be causing the lock screen to activate.

Check Power Settings

  • Verify Power Settings:
    1. Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep.
    2. Ensure that the settings for "Screen" and "Sleep" are set to "Never" for both "On battery power" and "Plugged in" options.
  • Check Advanced Power Settings:
    1. In the Power & sleep settings, click on Additional power settings.
    2. Click on Change plan settings next to your selected power plan.
    3. Click on Change advanced power settings and ensure that settings for sleep and display are configured correctly.

Update Device Drivers

  • Update Graphics Drivers: Sometimes outdated or corrupted graphics drivers can cause display issues. Visit the HP website or the device manufacturer's site to download the latest drivers.
  • Update Other Drivers: Make sure all your drivers are up to date, especially those related to system components and peripherals.

Check for Windows Updates

  • Update Windows: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, and check for any updates that might be pending.

Check Event Viewer

  • View Event Logs:
    1. Press Win + X and select Event Viewer.
    2. Look under Windows Logs > System and Application to see if there are any errors or warnings around the time the system locks.

Test in Safe Mode

  • Boot into Safe Mode:
    1. Restart your computer and repeatedly press F8 or Shift + F8 (for older systems) or Shift + Restart (for newer systems) to access the advanced boot options.
    2. Select Safe Mode and see if the issue persists. If it doesn’t, the problem might be caused by a third-party application or driver.

Create a New User Profile

  • Test with a New Profile:
    1. Go to Settings > Accounts > Family & other users.
    2. Click on Add someone else to this PC and create a new user account.
    3. Log in with the new account and see if the problem persists.

Check for Hardware Issues

  • Inspect Physical Connections: Ensure that all cables and hardware components are securely connected.
  • Run Hardware Diagnostics: Some HP desktops come with built-in diagnostics tools that you can access during startup. Run these tools to check for any hardware issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
