I have a HP desktop i'm trying to fix. After I put the pin in and log in, a couple of seconds later it will auto go to the lock screen. I've had this happen within seconds of entering the pin, to 40 seconds. I have the auto off and auto lock set to never, and i'm pretty sure it is not overheating. I did find that restarting the computer will allow a couple more seconds. How can I fix this?

Hi @TDK5,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're dealing with an issue where your HP desktop is locking unexpectedly after you log in. Here are a few steps you can try to diagnose and fix the problem.
Check for Malware or Software Issues
- Run a Full Virus Scan: Use your antivirus software to check for any malware that might be causing this issue.
- Check for Suspicious Programs: Look for any programs running in the background that could be causing the lock screen to activate.
Check Power Settings
- Verify Power Settings:
- Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep.
- Ensure that the settings for "Screen" and "Sleep" are set to "Never" for both "On battery power" and "Plugged in" options.
- Check Advanced Power Settings:
- In the Power & sleep settings, click on Additional power settings.
- Click on Change plan settings next to your selected power plan.
- Click on Change advanced power settings and ensure that settings for sleep and display are configured correctly.
Update Device Drivers
- Update Graphics Drivers: Sometimes outdated or corrupted graphics drivers can cause display issues. Visit the HP website or the device manufacturer's site to download the latest drivers.
- Update Other Drivers: Make sure all your drivers are up to date, especially those related to system components and peripherals.
Check for Windows Updates
- Update Windows: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, and check for any updates that might be pending.
Check Event Viewer
- View Event Logs:
- Press Win + X and select Event Viewer.
- Look under Windows Logs > System and Application to see if there are any errors or warnings around the time the system locks.
Test in Safe Mode
- Boot into Safe Mode:
- Restart your computer and repeatedly press F8 or Shift + F8 (for older systems) or Shift + Restart (for newer systems) to access the advanced boot options.
- Select Safe Mode and see if the issue persists. If it doesn’t, the problem might be caused by a third-party application or driver.

Create a New User Profile
- Test with a New Profile:
- Go to Settings > Accounts > Family & other users.
- Click on Add someone else to this PC and create a new user account.
- Log in with the new account and see if the problem persists.
Check for Hardware Issues
- Inspect Physical Connections: Ensure that all cables and hardware components are securely connected.
- Run Hardware Diagnostics: Some HP desktops come with built-in diagnostics tools that you can access during startup. Run these tools to check for any hardware issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
