Microsoft Windows 11

If your battery on your laptop does not charge (common problem with new laptops - static problem)

1) Turn off laptop

2) unplug charger

3) hold power butter down for 45 seconds

4) plug charger back in (the light will be orange and will change to white when fully charged)

5) Turn on the laptop power button

6) you will get a message about the laptop power) ignore this - the laptop will powerup a bit slower than usual - this is normal - then you will find the problem is all fixed.

Hi @Shona80 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for sharing this very effective procedure for resolving battery charging issues on newer HP laptops, particularly the HP 15.6 inch Laptop PC 15-fd0000.

You are absolutely correct—this sequence is known as a Hard Reset (or sometimes called a Power Drain), and it is the single most reliable troubleshooting step for fixing many common hardware glitches, including charging problems, unexplained failures of the USB or network ports, or systems failing to wake from sleep.

Why the Hard Reset Fixes Charging Issues

The problem you described (a laptop failing to charge even when plugged in) is often not a hardware failure but a software lock or electrical error state.

Modern laptop components (like the power management chipset and the battery management system/BMS) hold a residual electrical charge. If this system encounters an error or static electricity spike, it can "freeze" the power chip in an incorrect state (like "AC power is not present" or "Battery is charging normally"), even if the reality is different.

Holding the power button for 45 seconds with the power disconnected forces all residual power to drain from the motherboard's capacitors and the chipset's memory. This clears the power chip's error state, allowing it to initialize correctly when you plug the AC adapter back in.

Your Procedure Confirmed

Your steps are a perfect guide for performing this power drain:

  1. Turn off laptop -->Ensures the system is in a stable state.

  2. Unplug charge-->Disconnects the power source.

  3. Hold power button down for 45 seconds --> This is the critical step for draining residual charge.

  4. Plug charger back in --> Re-initializes the power management chip.

  5. Turn on the laptop power button --> Starts the system with the clear power chip.

  6. Ignore the power message -->The message is normal after a hard reset, confirming the system has re-calibrated..

Hope this helps resolve your issue.
