Hi @nopejo,

Thanks for engaging in HP support Forums! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips! I understand you need more information regarding UEFI Settings on your HP notebook. Don't worry I'll do my best to help you with this.

Going through your post, I understand you want to know more about the Key Ownership - HP Key, these are basically designed for business PC, however, here what it means as you are interested to know.

The factory-default HP BIOS sets Key Ownership to HP Keys. This means the HP platform key (PK), Microsoft key exchange key (KEK), Microsoft database (db), and a blacklist database (dbx) are populated. When Secure Boot is disabled, the keys currently enrolled in the system are preserved. If a custom PK, KEK, db, and dbx are desired, the user must change Key Ownership to Custom Keys. Once confirmed, this change will automatically disable Secure Boot and clear the PK, KEK, db, and dbx. The user may then import custom keys and re-enable Secure Boot.

Note If the user tries to import the HP PK when Key Ownership is Custom Keys, the BIOS will reject the PK.

I hope this answers your question. Let me know if you need any further assistance.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!

Eagerly waiting for your response!

Hi Jeet-singh

Thankyou for your reply. Does this mean Key is like a software licence key and not a keyboard key?

I am wanting to do a fresh install of Windows 10 and to activate it with a new activation key.

I don't have the original OS Key or HP Recovery.  Will HP Ownership set to HP Keys interfere with installation of a new operating system or will the installation process take care of any new keys.

Kind regards

nopejo

Hi

The Licencing/Activation for W10 is done automagically, using a Value stored on the Main Board and Registering it with Microsoft.

This means that future installs of the same OS will be Activated also, with no user input.

Something like 'KeyFinderInstaller' will show you the key if/when you have a working system.

If you change the OS to an upgrade, Home to PRO for instance then expect to pay for a new Licence.

If you are just doing an F11 Factory Fresh install or a standalone MS one there should be no problems.

and a HOW2 is here...

and of course a Linux install does not need an MS key at all.
