Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Greetings, Champions.

I need a BIOS update. Here are the details.

Product number: V8P12AA
Serial number: [personal info removed]

Model: HP Pavilion Desktop - 510-p030

Current BIOS: BIOS Version/Date AMI F.04, 5/10/2016

Steps taken so far:

  • Attempted to find/search for an update using HP Support Assistant App, no drivers available.
  • Attempted to find/search for an update using HP Support Assistant Web Version, no drivers available.
  • When clicking on All Drivers, there are 3 BIOS updates listing for my system.
  • Looking at the previous versions for all 3 BIOS updates, none of them list my current BIOS, hence my skepticism to try and install one of these updates. None of them list: F.04, 5/10/2016

Hi @KingMidas

Per this HP Support site your PC has the Hamar MB. The Hamar MB designation is MB SSID 81B4.

This BIOS update is for the Hamar MB.

I don't know why BIOS version F.04 is not on the revision list.

Going from F.04 to F.42 is a big jump. But I don't see any reference to installing an interim BIOS version prior to updating the BIOS to F.42.

Regards

I appreciate the response. Your concern is my concern as well. That is quite a version jump. Do you feel it would be safe to attempt to install F.42?

Here are some additional details.

Hi @KingMidas

My pleasure.

CPU-Z confirms the 81B4 MB SSID.

Why do you want to update the BIOS?

I really can't say if you would have any issues when updating the BIOS in this situation. HP seems to be giving the green light. It is impossible to predict what happens.

Loss of AC power or shutting down the PC during a BIOS update would not be advisable.

Thank you for the confirmation.

We want to get the PC updated for a Windows 11 upgrade and to ensure it is running optimally, free of as many bugs as possible.

Hi @KingMidas

Thanks for the information.

This PC would not support W11 with a BIOS update.

However, @Paul_Tikkanen can assist with a W11 update using unsupported hardware.

Hi @KingMidas

My pleasure.

I am surprised Paul has not responded.

You could start a new thread on how to update to W11 using unsupported hardware.

This Site explains how to update to W11.

You should create a backup image of the current Windows installation and the required software vendor's USB bootable recovery drive in case the W11 update fails. I use the free Paragon Community Edition Backup and Recovery to create OS images.

The entire process is fairly complex. You may have to do this again when Microsoft releases annual W11 feature updates. I can't say if the W11 update process and potential headaches to maintain this OS are worth the time and effort.

W10 should be in tip-top shape (current hardware drivers and stable system files) before doing the update to W11. Use the System File Checker commands at an admin command prompt to verify system files are good:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Then run:

sfc /scannow

Disconnect unnecessary peripherals when doing the update.

There are rumors Microsoft is now working on Windows 12.
