I can't get a BIOS Update to install from HP Support Asst.. It gives me a lack of space error. I currently have 680 GB of free space on a 1TB drive. That should be plenty of space, I would think.

Greetings @HGay

Welcome to the HP Forum.

I've seen this happen before.

HP stores some of the BIOS files in the hidden 100 MB EFI System Partition.

You have two possible workarounds:

1. Use partitioning software to do the following: shrink the adjacent Windows partition; 200 MBs of additional free space is good. Move the unallocated (free) space to the front of the Windows partition. Then use the free space to expand the EFI system partition.

2. Try a HP USB BIOS recovery outside of the operating system.

Both workarounds are fairly complex.

I suggest trying option 2 if you are uncomfortable messing with partitions. And you could damage the Windows installation using option 1. The EFI partition is required to load Windows.

You'll have to use your PC's: product number or the serial number at this HP Site to download the latest BIOS update.

Then go to this HP Site. Scroll down to " Recover the BIOS using a USB recovery drive".

Follow instruction at the second HP site to create and use the USB drive to update your PC's BIOS.

Once I was informed that the space issue was with the EFI partition, I did a little more research and found that I could mount that partition and remove certain files to create the space needed by performing the following

1. Run CMD as Admin

2. mountvol S: /s

3. cd s:/efi/microsoft/fonts

4. copy *.ttf x: (to anywhere you wish to save those files)

5. del *.ttf

6. mountvol S: /d

Reboot your computer

Then perform your BIOS update. Once complete you can remount your EFI drive as in Steps 1 & 2 and copy your font files back if you wish. This proceedure worked great without haviing to mess with the partition size at all.

Thanks,

HGay

Greetings @HGay

Very good.

I did not suggest the option you used to get the BIOS update done because many folks don't mess around with Command Prompt or PowerShell.

I increase the EFI System Partition to permanently fix the problem.
