Recently my HP Pavilion Desktop had to be repaired expensively by changing the motherboard. The issue arose because I used a HP BIOS update offered by Microsoft as a driver update for my PC. After the errorless completion of the update my PC was completely dead! I repeatedly used BIOS updates offered by HP Support Assistant in the past without without any problems. So I would like to know if I should install such updates explicitely offered by HP in the future: Thank you very much for any feedback!

Hi @gelecust ,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I'm sorry to hear about the issues you faced with your HP Pavilion Desktop. BIOS updates are essential for system stability, compatibility, and security, but they can sometimes pose risks if not done correctly. Here are some general recommendations:
Use Official Sources:
- It's generally safer to obtain BIOS updates directly from the official HP support website rather than relying on third-party sources or Windows/Microsoft updates.
HP Support Assistant:
- As you mentioned, using HP Support Assistant for BIOS updates is a good practice. The tool is designed to provide official and compatible updates for your HP device.
Check Release Notes:
- Before installing any BIOS update, check the release notes provided by HP. This information will outline the changes and fixes included in the update.
Stability of the System:
- If your system is running smoothly and you're not experiencing any issues, it might be wise to hold off on BIOS updates unless there is a specific reason to do so (such as a critical security update or compatibility issue).
Backup Before Updating:
- Before performing a BIOS update, it's a good practice to back up important data. While the risk of data loss during a BIOS update is low, it's always better to be safe.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
