I am charging my battery full , but after 2-3 hr it shuts down. When it restarts, then a popup message related to a battery issue is showing error 601 and in hp support assistant app it is showing i have to replace my battery. So replacing the battery is the only option, or is there any other way I can solve this? I bought this 4 yaers ago

Hi @Sauravme

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how concerning it feels to see your laptop shut down after only a couple of hours on battery, followed by the Error 601 message. You’ve already done the right thing by running the battery check in HP Support Assistant, and I appreciate the effort you’ve taken to gather those details. Let’s go through what they mean and what you can try.

What the Battery Report Shows

  • Cycle count: 653 / 1000 – Your battery has gone through over 650 charge cycles. Most notebook batteries are designed for about 1000 cycles, so it’s well into its lifespan.
  • Design capacity: 41 WHr vs. Full charge capacity: 10 WHr (24%) – The battery can now hold only about a quarter of its original charge. This explains why it drains quickly.
  • Error 601 – This indicates the battery is no longer able to sustain normal operation and needs attention.

Steps You Can Try Before Replacement

Hard Reset

  • Power off the laptop.
  • Disconnect the power adapter and remove any external devices.
  • Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the adapter and power on.

Battery Calibration

  • Charge the battery to 100%.
  • Keep the laptop running on battery until it shuts down completely.
  • Recharge to 100% without interruption.
  • This helps Windows read the battery capacity more accurately, though it won’t restore lost capacity.

Update BIOS and Drivers

  • Visit the HP Software and Driver Downloads page:
    HP Software and Driver Downloads
  • Enter your laptop model.
  • Install the latest BIOS update and Power Management driver.
  • Restart the laptop after installation.

Check Battery Health in HP App

  • Open the HP App from the Start menu.
  • Select your device, then go to Support > Diagnose & Fix.
  • Run the battery health check again to confirm the results.

Since the battery’s full charge capacity has dropped to 24% of its design capacity, replacement is the long‑term solution. The steps above can help confirm the diagnosis and ensure your system is up to date, but they won’t restore lost battery health. Once replaced, you’ll enjoy the full runtime again without unexpected shutdowns.

Would you like me to also guide you through checking whether your model supports a user‑replaceable battery or if it requires service center replacement?

Take care, and have an amazing day!
