Dear Support Team,

I’ve recently noticed a significant decrease in my Chromebook’s battery life. It used to last up to 10 hours on a full charge, but now it barely holds a charge for 3 to 4 hours. I haven’t changed my usage habits, so I’m wondering if there’s something wrong with the battery.

Could this be an indication that the battery is worn out, or might there be other factors contributing to this issue? I’d appreciate any guidance or troubleshooting steps you can provide to address the problem.

Thank you for your time and assistance.

Best regards,

Hi @1BS,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It’s concerning to see such a drastic reduction in your Chromebook's battery life. Here’s a breakdown of possible reasons and troubleshooting steps.

Possible Causes:

  1. Battery Wear: Over time, lithium-ion batteries naturally degrade, reducing capacity. If your Chromebook is older, this might be expected.
  2. Software Updates: Recent updates might introduce higher power consumption due to changes in software behavior.
  3. Background Processes: Apps or processes running in the background might be consuming more power than before.
  4. Charging Habits: Consistently overcharging or letting the battery drain completely can shorten its lifespan.
  5. Hardware Issue: If the battery or internal power management system is damaged, it can lead to reduced performance.

Troubleshooting Steps:

Check Battery Health:

  • Use Crosh (Chrome OS Shell):
    1. Press Ctrl + Alt + T to open Crosh.
    2. Type battery_test and press Enter.
    3. Review the results, which will indicate the battery health and expected charge capacity.

Monitor Power Usage:

  • Check for apps or extensions consuming excessive power.
  • Go to Settings > Device > Power to see if you can identify culprits.

Update Chrome OS:

  • Ensure your Chromebook is running the latest version of Chrome OS, as updates often include performance improvements.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Turn off the Chromebook.
  • Hold the Refresh key and press the Power button simultaneously. Release both when the Chromebook restarts.

Adjust Settings:

  • Lower screen brightness.
  • Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when not in use.
  • Close unused apps or tabs.

Battery Calibration:

  • Fully charge the battery, then let it drain completely.
  • Recharge to 100% without interruption.

Test with Safe Mode:

  • Disable all extensions and restart. If the battery lasts longer, an extension might be causing the issue.

When to Replace the Battery:

If the battery health report indicates a significant drop in capacity (e.g., below 70-80% of its design capacity) or the troubleshooting steps do not help, it may be time to replace the battery.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
