The Batter is Very Low, Plug in Your Computer Now message has not shown the last two times I turned the machine on.  Do I not then, really need a new battery?  It's income tax time, I'd like to down load the programme, get the taxes done but also do not want to risk computer.

Thanks for getting back.

It sounds like you've made some progress by replacing the surge charge unit, and the "Battery is Very Low" notice has stopped appearing.

While this could indicate that the new surge charge unit resolved the issue, it's also possible that the motherboard battery (typically a CMOS battery) still needs replacing.

Here’s why:

  • Surge Charge Unit Replacement: If the surge charge unit was malfunctioning, it could have caused power inconsistencies that triggered the low battery notice. Replacing it might have stabilized the power supply, resolving the issue.
  • CMOS Battery: The motherboard battery is responsible for maintaining BIOS settings and the system clock. If it's old or depleted, it can cause errors or warnings. Even though the notice has disappeared, the battery might still need replacing to ensure long-term stability.

To be sure:

  1. Check BIOS Settings: Restart your computer and enter the BIOS menu. If the system clock or settings are incorrect, it’s a sign the CMOS battery needs replacing.
  2. Replace the CMOS Battery: If you haven’t already, replacing the CMOS battery is a simple and inexpensive step. It’s usually a CR2032 coin cell battery.

If everything seems stable now, you might not need to replace the motherboard battery immediately, but it’s worth keeping an eye on your system’s behavior.

Let me know if you need guidance on replacing the CMOS battery! 😊

Take care, and have an amazing day!

it is a desktop computer, Hp Pavilion 500-449.  I was getting a message saying Battery is Very Low, Plug in Your Computer Now.  Internet sources said the battery in the mother board needed replacing.  But one solution I read online was to replace the battery surge charge unit, so I did, it was over ten years old anyway.  But the notice still appeared.  Then yesterday the battery is low notice stopped appearing.  So did a new surge charge unit work after all?  Do I still need a new battery in the mother board?
