Forgotten BIOS Password on an HP System – What Are Your Options?
If you’ve lost or forgotten the BIOS password, here’s what HP officially supports and what may be possible depending on your PC model.
1. Contact HP Support – This Is the Only Safe and Official Path:
HP can reset BIOS passwords, but only under specific conditions, and only with proof of ownership.
🔹 Visit https://support.hp.com/us-en.
🔹 Provide your serial number
🔹 You’ll need to show proof of purchase
🔹 HP may offer one of the following:
A temporary unlock code.
A special SMC.bin file.
Or in some cases, suggest a motherboard replacement if reset tools aren't applicable.
Please Note: Business systems (HP Z Workstations, EliteBooks, EliteDesk/ProDesk, etc.) are more likely to be eligible for BIOS reset via file or code.
Consumer systems (Pavilion, Envy, etc.) may not have this option—HP may recommend a board replacement.
2. What About Jumpers or Third-Party Tools?
While some older HP desktops and laptops had a BIOS reset jumper (such as the E49 or CLR_CMOS), these typically:
Only clear user settings, not administrator passwords
Do not reset BIOS passwords on modern business-class HP machines
Third-party tools like CH341A flashers or CMOS chip programming exist, but:
They void your warranty
Can brick your motherboard
Are most definitely not recommended or supported by HP
HP Will Not Provide Reset Instructions Publicly:
Due to security and anti-theft protections, HP will not share BIOS reset procedures via forums, phone, or chat unless:
The request comes from the verified owner
The PC is still within support eligibility (may depend on warranty or model type)
Summary:
DO contact HP Support with proof of ownership.
DO NOT expect public reset instructions or use random tools from the internet.
For consumer PCs, a motherboard replacement may be HP’s only official option.
For business systems, HP may issue a BIOS unlock file or code under certain conditions.
Hope this was helpful.
Kind Regards,
