I'm setting up this PC for my dad. It was bought yesterday and was working great until I tried installing Photoshop elements 10.
It prompted a restart and went to a blue screen and is asking for a Bitlocker key... it has a recovery key ID. There is no Bitlocker key associated with the PC in his Microsoft account.

Hi @CharlesLloyd47,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding retrieving the BitLocker key!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Try these steps:
Microsoft Account & Device Verification:
- Visit Microsoft's BitLocker Recovery Key page and sign in using your dad's Microsoft account. Sometimes, the key is stored here even if it wasn't manually linked.
- Check if the device is listed and see if the recovery key is available.
Check Other Devices or Accounts:
- If your dad has used another Microsoft account on this PC, try logging in with it to see if the recovery key was saved there.
- Look for any backed-up data from other devices that might have stored the key, such as another PC or cloud storage connected to the Microsoft account.
Contact Microsoft Support:
- If the key is not available through Microsoft accounts, contacting Microsoft Support can provide further assistance. They may offer methods to retrieve or reset the key.
Reset the PC (Last Resort):
- If you're unable to retrieve the recovery key and there is no crucial data on the device, consider performing a factory reset. You can usually do this by using HP’s recovery options:
- Turn off the PC, then turn it on and start pressing F11 repeatedly until you enter the recovery environment.
- Follow the instructions to reset the PC to factory settings, which will reinstall Windows and remove BitLocker encryption temporarily.
I hope this helps.
