Hi @MR2617,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be happy to help you!
If the brightness of your HP Laptop 15.6-eq2144au automatically decreases when you try to increase it, this could be due to several reasons. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and fix the issue:
1. Check Power Settings:
- Adjust Power Settings:
- Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep.
- Click on Additional power settings on the right side (or Related settings).
- Click on Change plan settings next to your selected power plan.
- Click on Change advanced power settings.
- Expand the Display section and adjust Enable adaptive brightness settings for both On battery and Plugged in to Off.
- Click Apply and then OK.
2. Disable Adaptive Brightness:
In Windows Settings:
- Go to Settings > System > Display.
- Scroll down to Brightness and color.
- If you see an option for Night light, ensure it's turned off or adjust its settings.
In BIOS/UEFI Settings:
- Restart your laptop and enter BIOS/UEFI by pressing the appropriate key (often Esc, F2, or Del).
- Look for power or display settings related to adaptive brightness or automatic brightness adjustment and disable them if available.
3. Update Graphics Drivers:
Check for Updates:
- Right-click on the Start button and select Device Manager.
- Expand the Display adapters section.
- Right-click on your graphics card (e.g., AMD Radeon) and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
Manually Install Drivers:
- Visit the HP Support website or the graphics card manufacturer’s website (AMD/NVIDIA).
- Download and install the latest drivers for your graphics card.
4. Check for HP Support Assistant Updates:
- Update HP Support Assistant:
- Open the HP Support Assistant application on your laptop.
- Check for any available updates and install them.
Please find the remaining steps in the next post.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @MR2617,
Please find the remaining steps below.
5. Check for Windows Updates:
- Update Windows:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates and install any available updates.
6. Adjust Display Calibration:
- Recalibrate Display:
- Go to Settings > System > Display.
- Scroll down and click Advanced display settings.
- Click on Display adapter properties for Display 1.
- Go to the Color Management tab and click Color Management....
- Select Advanced and click Calibrate display.
7. Test in Safe Mode:
- Boot into Safe Mode:
- Restart your laptop and hold down the Shift key while clicking Restart from the Start menu.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- Press F4 to start in Safe Mode.
- Check if the issue persists in Safe Mode.
8. Check for Background Applications:
- Identify Conflicting Software:
- Check if any software running in the background might be affecting display settings.
- Use Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) to see if any applications are using excessive resources or adjusting brightness.
If none of these steps resolve the issue, it could be related to a hardware problem, such as a malfunctioning brightness sensor or display issue. In that case, contacting HP support or visiting a service center might be necessary for further diagnosis and repair.
