Hi @Renee132,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
If your HP desktop can't log in and you're trying to boot into Safe Mode, here’s a simple guide to help you do that, even if you're stuck at the login screen.
How to Boot into Safe Mode (Without Logging In)
Option 1: Use the Power Menu (if accessible)
- On the login screen, click the Power icon (bottom right).
- Hold Shift and click Restart.
- Your PC will reboot into the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).
Option 2: Force WinRE with 3 Failed Boots
If you can’t access the Power menu:
- Turn on your PC and force shut it down (hold the power button) 3 times in a row during boot.
- On the 4th boot, Windows should enter Recovery Mode.
Once in Recovery Mode
- Click Troubleshoot.
- Go to Advanced Options > Startup Settings.
- Click Restart.
- On the next screen, press 4 or F4 to boot into Safe Mode.
What You Can Do in Safe Mode
- Run antivirus scans
- Uninstall problematic apps or updates
- Create a new user account
- Check disk health using chkdsk
I hope this helps.
Take care, and have an amazing day!
