CMOS Reset Error

I have a HP Omen desktop. Recently on startup I am getting a CMOS reset error. When shutting down I have been disconnecting from the power outlet. I then tried not disconnecting from the power outlet and then it starts up normally. I deduce from this it is the CMOS battery and assume that when connecting to a mains power supply that the CMOS is powered from that, is this correct? There is no reason that I need to disconnect from the power outlet. Is there any reason why I shouldn't carry on in this mode and not bother with the CMOS battery?

Hi:

If you have your PC plugged into a power surge protector there should be no need to unplug it from the wall socket.

I would agree with you that not having the PC plugged in does wear out the coin cell battery faster than leaving it plugged in and turned off.

However, the next time you have to open the PC up for something like routine cleaning, you may want to replace the coin cell battery at that time.
