Microsoft Windows 11

My camera driver is completely gone. I have tried every solution, updating it, updating my whole laptop, even deleting it to reinstall it, which now I can't reinstall it at all. Any app I try to use my camera on tells me I don't have a camera connected. I went to the website to redownload the camera driver, only for there not to be one there either. I'm horrible with computers, and don't understand anything that's happening.

@slimeboycharlie, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

I understand how frustrating it can be when your camera suddenly disappears, especially when you've already tried several steps. Don’t worry, I’ll guide you through a few solutions that should help get your camera working again.

Check Device Manager for Hidden Devices

Sometimes the camera is just hidden or disabled.

  1. Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  2. Click View > Show hidden devices.
  3. Expand Imaging Devices, Cameras, or Sound, video and game controllers.
  4. If you see your camera listed (even greyed out), right-click it and choose Enable device or Update driver.

Scan for Hardware Changes

If the camera isn’t listed at all:

  1. In Device Manager, click Action > Scan for hardware changes.
  2. If Windows detects the camera, it should reinstall the driver automatically.

Install HP Support Assistant

HP Support Assistant can automatically detect and install missing drivers.

Use Windows Optional Updates

Sometimes camera drivers are available through Windows Update.

  1. Go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates.
  2. Look under Driver updates for any camera-related drivers and install them.

Restore Camera Driver via System Restore (Optional)

If the camera was working recently, you can try restoring your system:

  • Type Create a restore point in the Start menu > System Restore > choose a restore point from before the issue started.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!
