Hi

I have a laptop and all of a sudden it says there is no camera fitted.  It has worked fine for the last year but when I go into the settings there is no inbuilt camera showing?  I have checked with my IT guys but it is definitely not a software issue - it has just disappeared.

My camera is not visible.  The slider is open.  When you go to settings there is no camera there at all.  It as there last Friday when I had a Teams call.

Hi @Lindyloo65,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing issues with the camera. Since the privacy slider is open and the camera was functioning during a Teams call, the issue may be related to software or settings. I kindly request you to please follow the steps outlined below to help resolve the issue.

Device Manager (Windows):

  • Open Device Manager by right-clicking on the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.
  • Look for Cameras or Imaging devices. If you see your camera listed, right-click on it and choose Enable if it's disabled.
  • If there is an exclamation mark or issue, right-click and select Update Driver. Choose the option to let Windows search for the latest driver.
  • If the camera isn't visible, click on View, then Show hidden devices to see if it appears.

Check Privacy Settings (Windows 10/11):

  • Go to Settings > Privacy > Camera.
  • Ensure that camera access for the device is turned on, as well as allowing apps to access your camera.

System Preferences (macOS):

  • For Mac, check System Preferences > Security & Privacy.
  • Click on the Privacy tab and ensure that apps are allowed to use the camera.
  • If the camera is not listed, your Mac may not be detecting the hardware.

Run Troubleshooter (Windows):

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
  • Select Additional troubleshooters and choose Camera to run the troubleshooter for hardware issues.

Run UEFI test: { To check if its hardware issue}

  • Shut Down: Turn off your HP computer completely by holding the power button for at least five seconds.
  • Access Startup Menu: Press the power button to turn it on and immediately start pressing the Esc key about once every second.
  • Launch Diagnostics: When the startup menu appears, press F2 to enter the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  • Navigate to Tests:
  • Select System Tests and then Extensive Test, or
  • Choose Component Tests and then select Webcam Test.
  • Run the Test: Select Run once and follow any instructions, such as pressing keys or clicking to confirm the test is working.

Take care and have an amazing day!
