Can I replace the AMD A9-9425 processor in my HP Pavilion 590 desktop with an AMD Ryzen 5 4500 processor (or similar) so that I can install Windows 11?

Note: - It is only the processor that needs upgraded to accept Windows 11.

If so can it be replaced without changing the motherboard; is it plug in or soldered in? If possible I would then probably leave it to my local computer repair shop to carry out the work.

Your PC's motherboard would not support the AMD Ryzen 5 4500 processor.

It wouldn't even support a Ryzen 5 2600 processor which is the minimum desktop processor that Microsoft certified to support W11.

The only way you can install W11 on your PC would be to use a workaround to do an in-place upgrade that bypasses the W11 hardware checks.

If you are interested in doing that, let me know and I will give you the procedure that I use which is very easy to do.

Otherwise, you will need to buy a PC that is supported to run W11 out of the box.

Thank you Paul for answering my questions. The only reason I would want to install Windows 11 is to ensure I continue to get security updates which I am led to believe will end for my present OS Windows 10 in October. If I install Windows 11 using a work around using my existing PC and current AMD processor I am told Microsoft will not support it. Is this correct?

Is there another AMD processor that can replace my processor in it's present motherboard and allow me to install Windows 11 or do I need to replace the motherboard complete with processor or at worst replace the whole PC? I only use my desk top for general home type work, photos and emails and not for streaming or gaming.

You're very welcome.

Microsoft will not support W11 on your PC (if you call them for help with Windows issues), but you will get the same cumulative and security updates that a fully hardware capable W11 PC gets.

I have been running W11 on my W11-unsupported PCs since it first came out 4 years ago and they all work fine on W11, get all the security and cumulative updates my fully supported W11 PC gets.

A few of them are older than your PC is.

The only update you will not automatically get is a new W11 build.

Once a year thus far, I have to use a workaround like the one at the link below to update to the new build.

This one is very easy to do.

How to Install Windows 11 on Unsupported PC in 2025 (New Easiest Method, No CMD)

I suppose you could do that every other year because the individual builds of W11 get support for two years.

This is the same policy for fully W11 hardware supported PC's.

In any event, it is just a minor inconvenience to do this once a year or once every other year.

As far as upgrading the processor, I would need to know the full model number or product number of your PC because there are many different model variations of the HP Pavilion 590 model series and they use different system boards.

Unless your PC has this system board at the link below, I doubt you will be able to upgrade the processor to one that supports W11.

Many thanks, Paul for your latest advice; absolutely great. Based on what you say I will keep my PC as is and install W11 using a workaround and see how I go. If you could advise me on the install procedure I would be very grateful.

You're very welcome.

Just watch the video in the link I posted yesterday which explains the entire process and then some.

If you don't have a lot of programs and files installed, the upgrade should take less than 30 minutes.
