Hi @Tony462,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP desktop is not recognizing your password after a BIOS update, it might be related to several potential issues. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the problem.
Check Keyboard Layout:
- Ensure that the keyboard layout has not changed (e.g., from QWERTY to AZERTY). You can check this by clicking on the language or keyboard icon on the login screen if available.
Caps Lock and Num Lock:
- Verify that the Caps Lock and Num Lock keys are not enabled unless your password requires them.
Restart the Computer:
- Sometimes a simple restart can resolve issues caused by updates.
Use On-Screen Keyboard:
- Try using the on-screen keyboard to enter your password. This can help if there is an issue with your physical keyboard.
Reset Password via Safe Mode:
- Restart your computer and press F8 (or Shift + F8) during startup to access Safe Mode.
- Log in with your account (sometimes Safe Mode can bypass certain password issues).
- If successful, you can change your password from Safe Mode.
System Restore:
- If Safe Mode is accessible, consider performing a system restore to a point before the BIOS update.
- Open the Start menu, type "System Restore," and follow the prompts to revert to an earlier restore point.
Use a Password Reset Disk:
- If you have previously created a password reset disk, you can use it to reset your password.
Use Another Administrator Account:
- If there are other administrator accounts on the computer, log in with one of them and reset your password.
Command Prompt Method (Advanced):
- Boot into Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
- Use the Command Prompt to enable the hidden Administrator account.
net user administrator /active:yes
- Restart your computer and log in as the Administrator. Then, change your password through the Control Panel.
BIOS Reset:
- Access the BIOS settings (usually by pressing F2, F10, DEL, or ESC during startup).
- Reset the BIOS to default settings. This might resolve any issues caused by the update.
If you are comfortable with these steps, you can try them one by one to see which one resolves your issue.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
