HI @mrslogan2003,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
There could be several reasons why your computer is losing its Wi-Fi connection frequently. Let's go through some common troubleshooting steps to identify and resolve the issue.
1. Check the Basics
- Restart Your Computer: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve connectivity issues.
- Restart Your Router/Modem: Power cycle your router and modem by unplugging them for about 30 seconds and then plugging them back in.
2. Check Signal Strength
- Proximity to Router: Ensure your computer is within a reasonable distance from the router. Obstacles like walls and furniture can weaken the Wi-Fi signal.
- Interference: Other electronic devices (e.g., microwaves, cordless phones) can interfere with Wi-Fi signals. Try to keep such devices away from the router.
3. Update Drivers and Firmware
- Network Adapter Drivers: Ensure that your Wi-Fi adapter drivers are up-to-date. You can check this via the Device Manager in Windows.
- Router Firmware: Make sure your router's firmware is up-to-date. Refer to the router’s manual or manufacturer’s website for instructions on how to update the firmware.
4. Network Settings
- Forget and Reconnect to Wi-Fi Network: Go to your Wi-Fi settings, forget the network, and then reconnect.
- Change Wi-Fi Channel: If multiple networks are using the same channel, it can cause interference. Change the channel on your router settings.
- DNS Settings: Sometimes, changing DNS settings to a public DNS like Google (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) can help with connectivity issues.
5. Check Power Management Settings
- Power Saving Mode: Ensure that your computer is not turning off the Wi-Fi adapter to save power. Go to Device Manager -> Network Adapters -> Right-click on your Wi-Fi adapter -> Properties -> Power Management tab -> Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".
6. Advanced Troubleshooting
- Network Reset: You can reset the network settings on your computer. This will remove and reinstall network adapters and set other networking components back to their original settings. In Windows, go to Settings -> Network & Internet -> Status -> Network reset.
- Check for Malware: Malware can sometimes cause connectivity issues. Run a full system scan using your antivirus software.
7. Hardware Issues
- Faulty Network Adapter: If none of the above solutions work, your network adapter might be faulty. You can try using a USB Wi-Fi adapter to see if that resolves the issue.
8. ISP Issues
- Check with Your ISP: Sometimes, the problem could be with your Internet Service Provider. Contact them to see if there are any known issues or outages in your area.
9. System Logs
- Event Viewer: Check the Event Viewer in Windows for any logs related to network disconnections. This can sometimes give clues as to what might be causing the problem.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
