I need to know what cords go where on the back of my tower. I have 3 USB cords. A green round one is connected to 1 of them.

Hi @Brutus-02,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how confusing this can be; those ports can look very similar, especially when you’re setting things back up. I’ll help you get this sorted.

From what you’ve described:

  • The green round connector is typically for a wired mouse (this is called a PS/2 port).
  • The USB cords (flat rectangular connectors) can be used for devices like:
    • Keyboard
    • Mouse (if it’s USB instead of round)
    • Printer, webcam, or other accessories

Basic guidance:

  • The green round port → Mouse
  • A purple round port (if present) → Keyboard
  • Any USB port → Keyboard, mouse, or other USB devices (they can usually go into any available USB slot)

To make sure we guide you correctly for your exact HP tower, could you please share a clear photo of the back of the tower?

Once we see the ports, we can:

  • Identify each connection for you
  • Tell you exactly where each cable should go
  • Help avoid plugging anything into the wrong port

We’ll take it step by step with you once you share the image.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
