My laptop is becoming overheated very quickly and whenever I open it now it comes up with a message saying the system has detected a cooling fan is not operating correctly.

The laptop itself has recently gotten very warm and yesterday when I was using it it turned off but has since turned on and does work but I haven’t been using it as much.

It says System Fan (90B) and I am not sure what this means

Hi @AN250,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • What is the exact HP laptop model?
  • How long has the fan error been appearing?
  • Have you noticed any unusual noises from the fan, like grinding or rattling?
  • Have you ever opened the laptop or cleaned the vents before?
  • Does the fan error appear immediately on startup, or only after some use?

In the meantime, here are some steps you can try:

Basic Checks

  1. Power cycle the laptop
    • Turn off the laptop completely, unplug it, and remove the battery if possible.
    • Hold the power button for 15–20 seconds, then restart.
  2. Clean vents and fan
    • Dust buildup can cause fan failure and overheating. Use a can of compressed air to blow out vents.
    • Avoid opening the fan assembly if you’re not comfortable  it may void the warranty.

Software & BIOS

  1. Update BIOS and drivers
    • Go to HP Support > Software & Drivers for your model.
    • Installing the latest BIOS can sometimes correct fan detection errors.
  2. Check BIOS fan settings
    • Restart and enter BIOS (usually F10).
    • Look for a “Hardware Diagnostics” or “Fan Test” option to see if the fan spins.

I Hope this helps
