My PC keeps randomly shutting down or refusing to wake up when switched on.  I have looked at the event viewer and discovered each time it has shut itself down it was due to a Critical level event.  How do i fix this?

Hi @LG1603,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • Your HP PC or laptop model
  • Your Windows version (Windows 10 or 11)
  • The exact Critical error name shown in Event Viewer (for example: Kernel-Power Event ID 41)
  • Whether this happens during use, while idle, or during sleep/hibernate

In the meantime, please try the following troubleshooting steps:

Step 1: Identify the Critical Event

  1. Press Windows + X → Event Viewer
  2. Go to Windows Logs > System
  3. Look for Critical events at the time of shutdown
  4. Note the Event ID and Source

(If it is Kernel-Power Event ID 41, this usually means the system lost power unexpectedly.)

Step 2: Check power and sleep settings

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options
  • Select High performance or Balanced
  • Click Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings
  • Disable Fast Startup:
    • Control Panel → Power Options → Choose what the power buttons do
    • Uncheck Turn on fast startup

Step 3: Update BIOS, drivers, and Windows

  • Open HP Support Assistant
  • Install all available updates, especially:
    • BIOS
    • Chipset
    • Graphics
  • Make sure Windows is fully up to date

Step 4: Run HP hardware diagnostics

  1. Turn off the PC
  2. Turn it on and repeatedly press Esc
  3. Select F2 – HP PC Hardware Diagnostics
  4. Run:
    • System Extensive Test
    • Battery test (if laptop)
    • Memory test

This will help rule out hardware faults such as RAM, power supply, or battery issues.

Step 5: Check for overheating or power issues

  • Ensure vents are not blocked and fans are running
  • If this is a desktop, confirm the power cable and outlet are secure
  • Avoid using power strips or extension cords while testing

I hope this helps.
