I wanted to change the DVD/CD drive to one that plays Blu-Ray but when I opened it up I noticed that the drive was one for a laptop???? Can someone explain or give me some ideas? I prefer to have an internal instead of an external one. Thank you in advance!

Thank you! Will any other 9.5mm sata models work or is it just designed to fit the HP replacement?

What is the thickness of the current CD/DVD device? Hopefully, it is not thicker than 9.5 mm.

Check the connections on the back of your current CD/DVD device.

Look for a possible adapter between a "standard" SATA interface to a proprietary interface on the motherboard.

If your current CD/DVD has that "adapter", remove it, and connect to the replacement device.

Or, the motherboard might have a "standard" SATA socket -- this arrangement is common on laptops, not so much on desktops.

Or, the back may connect to the "standard" SATA "data" and "power" cables, as one expects inside a "desktop" computer.

Anyway, most "slim" CD/DVD/BluRay devices should be compatible.

Hint: check for a "no questions asked return policy" from the store where you buy the BluRay device, should it not work out for you.

From: HP Pavilion 595-p0074 Desktop PC Product Specifications

Product number: 3LA57AA
Release date: 26-Apr-2018
Country/Region sold in: United States

DVD Writer (single-layer & dual-layer):

  • Data transfer rates up to 3,600 KB/s (CD read/write)
  • Data transfer rates up to 10,800 KB/s (DVD read/write)

but it does not mention that it is a "slim-line" product.

See: HP 9.5mm Desktop G2 Slim BDXL Blu-Ray Drive(N1M43AA)

for a device that seems to be compatible.
