I do not see any topic  related to my issue.  My HP computer is under warranty. Bought a few months ago. I tried using the CD/DVD writer. It does not automatically load even though  It shows it is set for Auto play. I've tried contacting HP support. Tried opening 'Chat' I click 'Submit' and there is no signs that it is going through.  3 days and no success. This is ridiculous. I have programs I need to download. Is there a toll-free phone number to call. I'm in NYC.

@StevieJB, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating it must be when your DVD/CD writer isn't working, especially when you need it for important installations. Let's walk through some steps to help resolve this issue.

Check Device Recognition

  • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  • Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.
  • If your drive is listed, right-click it and select Properties.
    • Under the General tab, check if it says “This device is working properly.”
    • If there’s an error code, please share it here.

Run the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter

  • Press Windows + R, type msdt.exe -id DeviceDiagnostic, and press Enter.
  • Follow the prompts to detect and fix hardware issues.

Check AutoPlay Settings

  • Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > AutoPlay.
  • Ensure AutoPlay is turned On.
  • Set the default action for CDs and DVDs to Ask me every time or Open folder to view files.

Try a Bootable Disc

  • Insert a known working bootable CD/DVD (like a Windows installation disc).
  • Restart your PC and press Esc or F9 during boot to access the boot menu.
  • If the disc boots, the issue is likely with Windows, not the hardware.

Update or Reinstall the DVD Driver

  • In Device Manager, right-click the DVD drive and choose Uninstall device.
  • Restart your PC. Windows should automatically reinstall the driver.

Check for Firmware or BIOS Updates

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
