I have an hp stream laptop model 14 and I am having an issue opening a file I downloaded. Once file is downloaded I click open file and a message pops up saying “this app can’t open” “there’s a problem with the app. Reinstall the application from its original install location or contact your administrator.”  I have reinstalled application multiple times and this message keeps popping up. I have also tried running it as administrator and that doesn’t do anything either. Any help?

@Kim1104, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Let me know the following:

Is this issue happening with just this app, or are you unable to download or open any apps at all?

What is the name and file type of the file you're trying to open? (e.g., .exe, .pdf, .docx)

What app is supposed to open it? (e.g., Adobe Reader, Word, custom software)

Meanwhile, you may try these:

Check System Requirements: Ensure that your system meets all the requirements for the application you’re trying to install.

Clear Cache and Temp Files: Sometimes, cached data might cause issues. Use Disk Cleanup to clear temporary files:

  • Press Windows key + R to open Run dialog.
  • Type cleanmgr and press Enter.
  • Select the drive you wish to clean (usually C:), and check the boxes for files to be deleted.

Run Windows Troubleshooter:

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
  • Run the troubleshooter for apps.

Check for Windows Updates: Ensure your Windows operating system is up-to-date:

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  • Click on "Check for updates."

Reinstall the Application:

  • Uninstall the app via Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
  • Download and install the app again from a reliable source.

Check for Administrator Privileges: Make sure you have the necessary permissions.

  • Right-click the installer and select "Run as administrator" to ensure you have the necessary privileges.

Reset Your PC’s App Store:

  • Open Settings > Apps.
  • Find the app in the list, click it, and select "Advanced options", then click "Reset".

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
