Drive D on my (rather old) desktop is very full. I seem to remember that I should be able to remove old files (e.g. from W7 and earlier ones (having made copy) from W10. Can anyone advise, please?

I am not sure what you meant but I think you want to delete the file from the time that the Windows 7 was on your computer.
The best way is just deleting them manually by sorting the file from the oldest one and then you may select which to delete.
Just right click on the drive or folder.
Then, select on Date and make it Ascending so the file that is older will show at first
You may also consider to hit on Group by and tap on Date
There is also a way to delete the files that are older than x days, but this is risky since all those files that fulfilling the term will be deleted. Aside of that, this one is easier though. Open it here
