During Windows startup, the display blinks with a black screen.

If your display blinks with a black screen during Windows startup, it could be caused by several issues ranging from graphics driver problems to hardware malfunctions. Here’s a step-by-step approach to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

1. Boot in Safe Mode

Safe Mode loads Windows with a minimal set of drivers and can help you determine if the issue is related to drivers or software.

Access Safe Mode:

  • Turn off your laptop completely.
  • Turn it on and repeatedly press the F8, Shift + F8, or Esc key (depending on your laptop model) before the Windows logo appears to access the Advanced Boot Options menu.
  • Select Safe Mode from the list.If the display does not blink in Safe Mode, it’s likely a driver or software issue.

2. Update or Roll Back Graphics Drivers

  • Right-click on the Start button and select Device Manager.Expand the Display adapters section.
  • Right-click your graphics card and select Update driver.
  • Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.In Device Manager, right-click on your graphics card and select Properties.
  • Go to the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver if the option is available.

3. Check for Windows Updates

  1. Update Windows:
    • Open Settings by pressing Win + I.
    • Go to Update & Security and click on Check for updates.Install any available updates and restart your computer.

4. Perform a System File Check

  1. Run SFC Scan:
    • Open Command Prompt as an administrator: Right-click the Start button and select Command Prompt (Admin) or Windows Terminal (Admin).Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.Wait for the scan to complete and follow any instructions provided.

5. Check for Display Hardware Issues

Hardware problems, such as issues with the screen or connections, can cause blinking issues.

  • If you’re using an external monitor, check the cable connections and try using a different cable or port.
  • Connect your laptop to an external monitor to see if the issue persists on the external display.
  • Inspect your laptop for any signs of physical damage, especially around the display area and internal connections.

6. Perform a System Restore

If the problem started recently, performing a system restore might help.

  1. Access System Restore:
    • Boot into Safe Mode.Search for Create a restore point in the Start menu and select it.
    • Click on the System Restore button and follow the instructions to restore your system to a previous point.

7. Reset Windows or Reinstall

If none of the above solutions work, consider resetting Windows or performing a clean reinstall.

Reset Windows:

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.Click on Get started under Reset this PC and choose Keep my files or Remove everything as appropriate.

Clean Install Windows:

  • Download the Windows 11 installation media from the Microsoft website.Create a bootable USB drive and follow the installation instructions.
