So, no sooner had I typed the last post when I looked and noticed this:

I then came up and started config'ing, where it then "Red Screened".

I am not a happy camper now.   Looks like I'll be spending time on the phone with support tomorrow.  This has to be a hardware problem, even though the diags aren't catching it.   Seems like I'm quickly heading towards the uncomfortable decision of repair vs. new computer.  (The probability of a new computer being another HP is  shrinking by the day here).

I wanted to mention here that my problem was solved, via a replacement.   Nothing but exemplary words for Jerry the Case Manager in Consumer Escalations, who contacted me offline, and got me back up and running.

They never got to the root cause, but my desktop has been replaced.

I am a very satisfied HP customer.
