First of all I want to thank you for your constant and prompt involvement in trying to help solve my very real problem.
I am happy to announce to you and the world that I now have an Operating System, namely Windows 7 Professional, successfullly installed on my new Harddrive.
In the end it was not your last suggestions but my own initiative that got the job done.
I opened the computer and inspected the DVD drive . The wire connection looke good and the physical connection also looked fine. Just in case I tightened the 2 screws holding the DVD in place.
So, with an eagle eye on the DVD drive and the sounds that it was making, I once again inserted the DVD 's.
Before doing this I vigourlessy cleaned the disks by doing the cross wipe on each of the 3 disks.
Guess what! Everthing was transferred without an Error notice!! It had all been downloaded!
Now the bad part.
"Windows is updating Software" which included Windows reboots at least 3 times.
Eventually I realised that this would continue indefinately, so I turned off the Computer and restarted.
Low and behold I was shown a log in screen, which enabled me to complete the installation.
Even though I now have the Windows 7 OPS on my new HD, I am not impressed at all with HP Support.
Without this FORUM I would be TOAST!!

Glad that it worked out. Did you do the Convenience Rollup update (mentioned in a previous post) to get past a bunch of the updates or just letting it do them one by one?

I did not due the rollup yet as it was getting late. But I intend to do it that way.
I will get back to it in a week or so, after celebrating my 80th birthday.
I will let yo know when it is done.
Thanks to THEOLDMAN!

Mission Accomplished!!!
Yesterday, I downloaded Rollup and preRollup files to computer and transferred to Thumb drive.
Installation Disks came with SP1 installed.
They both installed seamlessly on the new HD, which takes us to May 2016.
Connected to Internet and the Windows Update download, another 1.6 GB.
So now completely up to date. A few of the 60 failed at first but are in now after 3 tries.
Thank you OldMan for guiding me every step of the way.
Another question for you.
I have a windows XP sp3 disk which did not boot on the new HD, but I accessed it and selected Autrun.
A few clicks later I get--------"Need Administrator permission" to proceed.
Well, of course I am listed as the Administrator and use my password to access the System.
I looked through "USER Accounts" for permissions but could find nothing.
How can I get permission to get over this roadblock?
BTW, I am aware that I will have to Partition the disk to mount another OS.
You might ask why I would need XP in addition to Windows 7. It has to do with the Total Access Earthlink e-mail program only working with Windows XP.
Thanks for any help on this.
A last thought. Will this HD allow a Linux OS to be installed on another Partition? I understand that somehow it might not be compatible.

Glad to hear it worked out. As far as the installing WinXP, here are instructions on how to do that
https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/8790/dual-boot-your-pre-installed-windows-7-computer-with-xp/
I see in the post that you ran WinXP with "Autorun" so I assume that Windows 7 was booted up. In the write up you will note that after doing the hard drive partitioning, you need to change the boot order and boot to the WinXP install disk. That is ,close down the PC and then change the boot order to the DVD/CD drive and then boot to the WinXP install disk. That should get rid of the "Need Administrator permission"
As far as then adding Linux, that might be possible too, but look at the Linux sights and get advise on triple boot with the Linux people.

Back again 7 weeks later.
Even though your Geek link was very helpful, my system will not co-operate.
Essentially, I am being told that the earlier system (Windows XP) has to be installed before Windows7. This was when I inserted the XP DVD into the open Windows 7 and after a while it gave me the aforementioned message.
According to Geek this should not be an issue, but it is.
Also the boot order is wrong and I cannot correct it.
Let me be specific, I have put 2 bootable disks (Ubuntu and XP) into the DVD drive and restarted the computer and it boots to the hard drive and Windows 7.
I have done the following. On POST hold the ESC key and get the menu. F9 gives the boot order. I changed from Windows Boot Manager to CD/DVD SATA2 and upon restart did get the XPDisk to boot. However After a while I was informed that serious damage could occur and it stopped the installation. I rebooted after removing the DVD and got back to Windows 7 safely.
Question. With a new Hard drive is there some incompatibilty with the BIOS, Does it need to be reflashed.
Also I have now the HP Assistant program with mixed results on its findings. Certainly it has been unable to change the boot order.
It seems to me unless you have some pearls of wisdom to impart, I should either uninstall if possible or reformat the hard drive and then install Windows XP and Windows7 to follow.
Sincerely, Mogadishu.

Let me comment on this statement "Also the boot order is wrong and I cannot correct it." I think it can be set for the CD/DVD drive as first and stay on that choice ( if that is what you want ) by making that selection in the F10 choice from the Esc menu. The boot order made by the F9 selection does not stay in that order once the choice is executed but it will stay at that choice if done in the F10 menu and save the selection before going on. Making the boot device selection in the F10 menu choice is harder to find since it does not open with the boot device as the only thing to see, so you need to look for that.
"After a while I was informed that serious damage could occur " did that come out during the WinXP installation? Actually need the complete warning as that does not seem to be telling what happened. In the first post of this thread, you stated "This computer is less tha 3 years old" It might be that the hardware is not compatible with WinXP. Give a more complete model number than "HP Pavilion 500-200 Desktop PC series". There should be a specific number in the 200's IE: HP Pavilion 500-214.
"Question. With a new Hard drive is there some incompatibly with the BIOS, Does it need to be reflashed." no that is not necessary.
As to the HP Assistant program - you can uninstall that if you desire. It is meant more for keeping the programs up-to-date.
Anxiously awaiting your reply

Thanks for your continued help.
I will try the Esc, F10 choice and see if I can permanently change the boot order.
My computer model is HP PAV 500-205t.
Hopefully you can determine whether XP Prof. 32 bit can run alongside my Windows 7 64 bit system.
BTW on my other computer running Windows7, Linux Ubuntu installed seamlessly, also installing GRUB as the boot mechanism.
It will be a couple of days before I can get back to the next steps.
Thanks, Mogadishu.

Install the program into Windows 7.
Then, right-mouse-button click on its icon, and choose "Properties".
Click on "Compatibility".
Choose to launch the program as if it were running under Windows XP.
Close the Properties window.
Launch the program.
Windows 7 will create a "wrapper" around the program, to simulate a Windows XP environment.
Is that the only reason for wanting XP ?
P.S. I am surprised that Earthlink did not update that program, to be compatible with later versions of Windows.
