Product: HP EliteDesk 800 35W G4 Base Model Desktop Mini PC
Operating System: Linux

Hi,

I installed two identical NVMe drives into this mini desktop. These are the only drives in it. The BIOS sees both drives, but when I try to install any Linux OS (like Ubuntu) on the system it incorrectly tells me that it can't find any hard drives in the machine! I initially had set up RAID in this system's BIOS & thought that was the issue I was having. Unfortunately after changing it I have the same issue after setting it to non-RAID, so I'm not sure what I'm missing. I've seen other posts where people are running these same systems with two NVMe drives, so I know it's possible. Any ideas or suggestions to try?

 

Also , this system's BIOS has TONS of fields which I'm not familiar with on other computers. I tried to find information to better understand it, but was having trouble. Does anyone have a pointer to a good resource?

After dickering (yep that's the technical term) in this system's over-complicated but not documented BIOS, I was able to get an OS installed on this system.

 

Solution: Don't use the "hardware RAID" with Linux as it will not work. If you need RAID, then use software RAID which does work.
