Error during factory reset
01-20-2021 08:14 PM

I had a hard drive error. I replaced the hard drive with a new drive of the same model. Using previously created system recovery discs, upon doing a factory reset type of recovery, I get the exact same error as listed in https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Operating-Systems-and-Recovery/Attempted-factory-reset-restora...
Error code is as follows:

The reset failed when the process was checking your devices. If you have a device for which the proper driver has not been loaded, you will see an indication of that in Device Manager. That is what that section of the log indicates -- one or more such devices.
You need to check Device Manager on your own to see what device this is and if you can either disconnect it or upload the drivers.

Thank you so much for your response. There are no devices connected other than the keyboard and the mouse. I am doing a factory reset using system recovery discs on the pc with a new empty hard drive. So I don’t have a way of accessing Device Manager until the reset completes successfully.

Sorry, then you're stuck as you won't be able to clear this until you can get back into Windows.

The first message references some USB device.
Oddly, the second message references some "video" device.
Can you try a different USB keyboard, or a different USB mouse, or a different monitor (one without its own USB ports) ?

Reinstalling the OS from a USB Windows 10 installation media resolved the issue. The media was downloaded from Microsoft. The BIOS and/or the Microsoft account has the product key that is associated with the PC and the new install uses the same key - which is great.
