My HP Chromebook is making a whooshing sound on and off and giving me a recovery page but won’t turn on otherwise

Hi @Linz123456,

If your HP Chromebook is making a whooshing sound and frequently displaying a recovery page without turning on properly, this could indicate a hardware issue or a software/firmware problem. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check for Overheating:

    • The whooshing sound might be from the fan working harder than usual. Ensure the Chromebook's vents are not blocked and that the device is not resting on a soft surface that could impede airflow.
  2. Perform a Hard Reset:

    • Hold down the Refresh button and then press the Power button. Release both buttons. This can sometimes resolve minor software issues by resetting the hardware settings.
  3. Enter Recovery Mode:

    • If you keep seeing the recovery page, it may be necessary to reinstall the Chrome OS. Follow the instructions on the recovery page to perform a system recovery. If you need to create a recovery USB drive, use a separate computer and follow the instructions on the Chromebook Recovery Utility site.
  4. Check Internal Connections:

    • If you are comfortable doing so, check inside the device to make sure all cables and components are securely connected. If not comfortable, seek professional help to avoid voiding the warranty.
  5. Battery Check:

    • If your Chromebook can be opened, make sure the battery connections are secure, or consider removing the battery for a moment before reseating it.
