Thank you reply.
I have managed to sort problem out. I have 2 desktop pcs..My main one which i use for everday work...the other Hp one i used to put Linux OS on to try out...i installed it as single OS not dual boot ie Windows/Linux.
The problem was i could not get used to Linux...i had trouble in uninstalling it to put windows back on.
So i reformatted hard drive and used the HP Recovery Discs for factory reset...loaded ok but error messages kept popping up.I managed to access command prompt and checked partitions...still had Linux partition remnants left....
reformatted hard drive again...used HP Recovery Discs again...well 3 times actually...finally Pc got loaded with Windows 8.1..then re-installed Windows 10..Hooray...HP Pavillion pc working at last. Then i checked my partitions again this showed Recovery Partition ..D ...was too big.
Upon investigation HP Recovery Discs created extra Recovery Partitions...for some reason...i had to delete 2 partitions...to leave 1.
So, my HP Pavillion Pc is working fine with Windows 10 Creators Update.
Phew !..I got there in there in the end...took a weekend though..
Linux OS is a completely different world !

Thanks for reaching out to us on HP Support Forums. 🙂 I came across your post and would like to help.
I understand that you have an HP Pavilion 500 -242ea Desktop PC and post performing a recovery using the recovery disks, an error appears saying " No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed." I read that you have the troubleshooting steps from the HP document - HP PCs - Cannot Start Desktop Computer From a Bootable CD or DVD (Windows 😎 and it did not help. You've done a remarkable job performing the steps. I appreciate the steps you have performed and have certainly done a good job.
I would like to know the following information to assist you better:
- The exact product model no. This link will help you to find the model no: http://hp.care/2bygf7l. I'm unable to locate the model no. you mentioned in your post.
- May I know if you were facing any performance issues or was the hard drive replaced due to which you performed a system recovery?
- Did you create the recovery disks or did you order them from HP?
- Were all external devices disconnected during recovery (only the keyboard, mouse, monitor and the power cable should remain connected).
Meanwhile, I did some research and suggest you to perform the following steps to isolate and fix the issue:
- Let us run a test on the hard drive of the PC.
-
Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
-
Turn on the computer and immediately press the F2 key repeatedly, about once every second.
-
The HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu is displayed.
- Select Component tests.
- Please initiate a hard drive test. First, you may run the short test and if the short test passes then please initiate the extensive test on the hard drive.
If the hard drive test passes then you may try to perform a system recovery using the inbuilt recovery partition on the hard drive. Please refer to this link to know how to perform a system recovery using the recovery partition.
I sincerely hope this fixes the issue. Please keep me posted. Cheers!
