Omen desktop, i9 core, 3.6 GHz., 48 GB, four screens. The variable speed fan seem to run excessively and very loud. Many basic operations causes it to start up and run. All diagnostics run. All updates and drivers current. Task manager does not show anything excessive. 10% CPU usages causes fans to run loudly. When the core temp gets up to 200 the fans kick in. Idle temp is about 120. All fans are open and clear. Any ideas if this is a system problem or a fan problem?

Hi @Steve562 ,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
OMEN By HP 875-1000 Obelisk Desktop PC Excessive fan noise and frequent fan activation can be attributed to various factors, and it's good that you've already checked some aspects. Here are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:
Power Settings:
- Check your power settings to ensure that your computer is not set to a high-performance mode, as this can cause the CPU to run at higher clock speeds, generating more heat.
- Open the Power Options in the Control Panel and select a balanced or power saver plan.
BIOS/UEFI Settings:
- Check the BIOS/UEFI settings for any fan control options. Sometimes, some settings can be adjusted to control fan speed.
- Make sure that the BIOS/UEFI firmware is up to date. You can check the manufacturer's website for any available updates.
Thermal Paste:
- Over time, the thermal paste between the CPU and heatsink can degrade, leading to poor heat transfer. You might consider reapplying thermal paste if the system is out of warranty.
Hardware Monitoring Software:
- Use third-party hardware monitoring software to check the temperatures of individual components, such as the CPU and GPU. This can help identify if there's a specific component causing excessive heat.
Background Processes:
- Check for any background processes that might be causing the CPU to work unnecessarily. Task Manager is a good tool for this, but you can also use third-party task managers or system monitoring tools.
Malware and Antivirus Scan:
- Perform a thorough scan for malware and viruses. Sometimes, malicious software can cause the CPU to work excessively.
Fan Control Software:
- Some systems come with pre-installed fan control software. Check if your system has any, and if so, adjust the fan curves or settings to better suit your needs.
System Resource Monitoring:
- Use resource monitoring tools to identify any specific process or application that is causing the CPU usage to spike. Windows Resource Monitor or third-party tools can provide more detailed insights.
System Diagnostics:
- Run more comprehensive system diagnostics, including checking the health of your storage drive, memory, and other components.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
