After turning on the power button, my laptop takes in between 1 to 4 hours to get to desktop after signing in. This sometimes require multiple times of restarting the laptop. I can't replicate this and not sure what the cause may be. Overall, the system is slow as well.  I checked for viruses and malwares.  Anyone have similar problems?

Greetings @Maria_P1

Welcome to the HP Forum.

Please provide the Windows operating system version.

Please provide a specific HP Product Number for better assistance. Check this Site for details

Check your PC's hardware using HP Diagnostics as follows:

Start the PC. Repeatedly tap the "ESC" key.

Select "F2". Run extensive system and component tests to confirm: a drive problem, a memory problem, or other component problem.

You have a possible Windows problem if HP hardware tests pass.

You may have to backup data. Then do a HP Cloud Recovery or a clean Windows installation.

Can't say what your options are at this time without additional input from you.

Thank you for following up with this @Bill_To. Here's more information on my device:

  • Version: Windows 10
  • System Type: 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
  • Product number: 3VN48UA#ABA

When I got the 4-hour wait log in (which consisted of powering it on and off multiple times). I did get a beep when it was booting up. I ran a diagnosis on safe start up mode. It showed me an error with the hardware, but it went away, and I was able to log in.

So far, I have done the following through the HP support assistant under fixes and diagnostics:

  • I ran optimize performance. I did it without the without system file check because that got stuck at 40%
  • I also ran operating system diagnostics, and no issues have been found.
  • I did the fast check for hardware diagnostics, and everything passed. I am doing another check for each part. Currently, I am running long drive self-test (I ran this last night, but upon checking this morning there was not a message of its successful completion).

Greetings @Maria_P1

My pleasure.

Thank you for the detailed reply.

You have a HP 15-da004nr. Is this correct?

This PC has a 5400 RPM, 1TB HDD for the OS installation and data storage.

I would back up data to an external drive, if possible, ASAP.

The extensive drive test would take a while. However, this test should have completed by this morning.

I'm thinking it might be time to replace the factory HDD. I would do a much faster 2.5 inch SATA SSD instead of a slow platter HDD.

A local PC Tech could do this if you don't do this kind of stuff.

It might be possible to clone the existing operating system installation from the old drive to the new drive. But the HP drive seems to be running out of steam.

It looks like your PC qualifies for a factory operating system HP Cloud Recovery.

Hi @Bill_To! Yes, that's correct. I have my files backed up. Long drive test canceled on its own. Going to try one more time and check other parts after. I had a suspicion that it may be the HDD. Thank you for confirming and for the recommendations. I will do the HP cloud recovery next. Do you have any links to SSD you recommend?

Greetings @Maria_P1

I've been using Samsung 2.5 inch SATA SSDs since 2015.

All of these drives still work.

You can also look at: HP, or Crucial, or SanDisk for reliable SSD purchase options.

I would select a drive by price since competing brand quality and reliability should be equivalent.

Stay with a 1TB drive. HP's factory OS image (cloud recovery) might balk if you use a smaller capacity SSD.
