It's not to be expected as modern drives tend to last 3-5 years, but it's not impossible.
Also, failing drives can NOT be repaired -- at least, not for any reasonable cost (i.e., less than THOUSANDS of doillars) You would need to replace the drive, and then you would need to buy HP Recovery media to reinstall the OS and HP stuff on it.

The failure rate of OEM Consumer HDD's is approx 10-15% (in my experience). Seagate, WD etc.. only need to make them last 12 months when manufacturing them for the likes of HP or Dell.
That 10-15% can fail anywhere from 3 days to 3 years. It's luck of the draw.
On a POSITIVE note, that's practically the BEST thing to fail (in terms of cost & ease of repair) so yes, definitely worth getting repaired. Maybe look at getting an SSD next time.
