My HP Laptop - Mute button is flickering on and off rapidly - This has been happening for 24 hours now. I've tried adjusting the mute button, restarting the laptop, checking for updates, updating audio drivers. Nothing has worked so far. I haven't made any changes to software or driver. My best guess for what caused it - I wiped my laptop buttons with tissue and alcohol. Internet connection - wirless

Hi @JD274,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The flickering mute button issue you're experiencing on your HP laptop could be due to several factors. Given that you mentioned cleaning the laptop buttons with tissue and alcohol, it’s possible that moisture might have gotten into the laptop and affected the button’s functionality. Here are some steps you can take to address the issue.
- Power Down and Dry: Power off your laptop and let it sit in a dry area for a few hours or overnight. This will give any residual moisture a chance to evaporate.
- Check for Stuck Keys: Sometimes, a key can get stuck, causing issues. Gently press around the mute button to ensure it's not stuck or obstructed.
- Perform a Hard Reset: Disconnect all peripherals and power sources, then hold down the power button for about 15-20 seconds to perform a hard reset. This can sometimes resolve hardware glitches.
- Update or Reinstall Audio Drivers: Even though you’ve tried updating drivers, consider reinstalling them. Go to Device Manager, locate your audio drivers, uninstall them, and then restart your laptop to let Windows reinstall them automatically.
- Check Keyboard Settings: Sometimes, the issue might be related to keyboard settings or shortcuts. Go to your keyboard settings and check if there are any unusual configurations or shortcuts affecting the mute button.
- Use an External Keyboard: Connect an external keyboard to see if the mute button on it works correctly. This can help determine if the issue is with the laptop’s built-in keyboard.
- BIOS/UEFI Update: Check if there's an update available for your BIOS/UEFI. Sometimes, firmware updates can address hardware issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
