Hi @gailjb ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

  1. Microsoft Account Recovery (if using a Microsoft account):

    • If your account is linked to a Microsoft account, you can reset your password online.
    • Go to the Microsoft Account Recovery page.
    • Follow the prompts to reset your password. You'll need access to your email or phone number to receive verification codes.
  2. Use Password Reset Disk:

    • If you created a password reset disk previously, you can use it to reset your password.
    • Insert the disk into the ProBook and follow the on-screen instructions to reset the password.
  3. Local Account Password Reset:

    • If you’re using a local account (not linked to Microsoft), you can attempt to reset the password by booting into Safe Mode with Command Prompt:
    • Restart the computer and press F8 during boot to access the Advanced Boot Options menu.
    • Select "Safe Mode with Command Prompt".
    • When the Command Prompt appears, enter: net user [username] [new password] replacing "[username]" with your actual user name and "[new password]" with your new password.
    • Restart your laptop and log in with the new password.
  4. Using another Administrator Account:

    • If there is another administrator account on the ProBook, you can use it to reset your password from the Control Panel > User Accounts.
  5. Reset Your PC:

    • As a last resort, you can reset your PC. Note that this will remove all files, settings, and applications:
    • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
    • Select "Reset this PC" and follow the instructions to reset your device to factory settings.

If none of these methods are applicable or if you are facing hardware-based encryption (e.g., BitLocker without recovery key) then it will be very difficult to crack it and you may to replace the motherboard (last fix).

Hope this helps resolve your issue.
