Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Goal : reshuffle the boot order to get DVD and USB to be always be checked first for boot

PRESENT :  Have definitely  NTFS GPT drives and a FAT 32 GPT EFI Partition and a C:OS Boot GPT partition

---- ESC give me the access to  pre-startup info ;  the Boot Order are there  ( UEFI and LEGACY).

I have read online for hours about all this stuff---but confusion still exists .

PAST --- In the old days with BIOS on HP desktop , I could easlily change the boot order to get the

DVD or USB to boot first.  no problems--- .

PROBLEM :

1) changing the boot order  (( should i be trying to change the UEFI order or the Legacy ORDER ?? ))

---I think answer  is UEFI as the Lagacy is for older setup with BIOS and MBR -----???

2)  I cant seem to change the UEFI order---- I can ARROW DOWN to the DVD but when I press ENTER the

computer boots normally from C drive.

3)  Reading indicates that maybe SECURE BOOT has to be changed to allow UEFI boot order changes---

but there is confusion if this is true.

4) after making a  149GB RECOVERY IMAGE via WIN 7 64 bit stored on an EXTERNAL DRIVE, I just want to be

able to boot from WIN 7 BOOT REPAIR DISK DVD that WIN 7 made, so as to reload the RECOVERY IMAGE.

5)  Then there is also BOOT MANAGER, listed in boot order ( FIRST) --- I have only one OS, so I think BOOT MANAGER

is for dual boot ( that I do not need)------  should I move BOOT MANAGER to bottom of Boot order list or

delete it or what.

--capitalization is not yelling--- just to make reading easy.

Have a nice day------  comments welcome.

Hi, srsndguru here, What I learned about how to rearrange the boot order in the Bios Setup Utility . On my hp pav. 570-p026 Windows 10 anyhow. The configuration may differ from yours but here’s how I was able to rearrange the  the Hard Drive  option that was on the bottom of the list below the Floppy Disk and the CD/DVD options. Using the arrow keys scroll down to the USB Hard Drive option. Click enter. That hi-lights that Hard Drive option. Then on that hi-lighted Hard Drive use the arrow keys to scroll it  up to the top of the list. When you move  the hi-lighted Hard Drive to where you want to place it. Press the enter key again , the hi-light dissapears and there it stays, now at the top of the list. Hope this helps. Im still learning this stuff.

thanks for comments.

You have WIn10 and it works via BIOS ?   I did not think that was possible ...

My MSINFO32 run says BIOS version AMI 7.5 and it says nothing about UEFI----but I have 100 MB FAT32 EFI Partions on my
GPT drives  which by defintion is UEFI               --- SO THIS IS QUITE confusing. I am trying to figure out if the WIN 7 computer is  booting via UEFI method or Legacy BIOS method -----------or some confusing HYBRID method ??!!

-----------I cannot find or see any MBR on my hard drive, but the HYBRID mode of booting requires that

a MBR be present on the drive .       --Kinda like a bad dream...situation......

HERE ARE MANY COMMENTS from INTERNET ON UEFI vs BIOS----------below

These are just different ways of storing the partition table on a drive.
GPT is more modern, and is required for booting Windows systems in UEFI mode.

MBR is required for booting older Windows systems in BIOS mode, although the
64-bit version of Windows 7 can also boot in UEFI mode.

Legacy Mode refers to BIOS firmware. ... Unified Extensible Firmware Interface(UEFI) is the successor to BIOS.

UEFI uses the GUID Partition Table (GPT) whereas BIOS uses the Master Boot Record(MBR) partitioning scheme.

GPT and MBR are both formats specifying physical partitioning information on the hard disk.
Legacy uses Master Boot Record. UEFI uses GUID Partition Table.

While Legacy BIOS boot simply and stupidly reads and executes code from a fixed
address off the disk (part of the Master Boot Record).
UEFI boot searches for EFI boot files in an EFI system partition and executes one of those.

((BIG CONFUSING COMPLEXITY : )) GPT partitioned disks may also contain a hybrid MBR with boot code able to load the EFI files in order to support both UEFI and Legacy BIOS boot modes. UEFI uses files within a large partition (typically 100 MB) to boot the operating system.
(( EVEN MORE CONFUSING here ----))Typically they still require the MBR to be present.

Hi, Thank you for that Info, I will change the Boot Order to cd-dvd on top. Using Legacy Boot Configuration. I have not tried that. I assumed Hard Drive option on top made more sense. I will have to re- read  and use the information you presented while accessing the Bios Setup Utility. Some of the information you presented I will have to process on a hands on  Screen on approach. I will utilize the info you provided as I understand it and post it. Thank you for  taking the time to help. Srsndguru
