HP 500-045EO
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have asked a similar question already, but I don't think the wording was quite specific enough, so I'll try again.

A Microsoft Forum editor still insists that this PC is not compatible with Windows 10, saying the drivers  HP itself has developed are not not compatible. She has not said where she has got this information from.

I can see from the products' drivers page that it is only possible to set Windows 8 as the applicable version, but I can see on the Windows 10 support page that the PC has been tested after the 2017 Fall Creators Update , so I assume that means that it runs OK?

I have had WIndows 10 running since september 2015 and have not seen anything that could suggest a driver problem. The Microsoft Forum editor say though that I can expect to encounter problems with future WIndows 10 updates.

Who/what should I believe?

Hi, @Bill-H1

Below is the link to the document which lists the PC's HP tested for W10 FCE.

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05195282

Your model series is not on the list, so you may experience some issues if you upgrade to the W10 FCE.

Here is my 2 cents worth...

I looked at the specs for your PC, and I see two possible issues...

1.  The IDT audio.  But there is a driver that usually works to restore the audio (except the headphone jack may not work).

This package provides the IDT Tempo High Definition Audio Driver for supported desktop models that are running a supported operating system.

File name: sp71717.exe

If your set of PC speakers has a headphone jack input like mine do, the PC's headphone jack not working should be a non-issue.

2.  The Atheros wireless network adapter...There are no updated W10 FCE drivers for that, so while it will probably work, I cannot guarantee that it will.

The solution to that issue if the wifi card quits working would be to install an external USB wireless network adapter.

What would I do if I were you?

I would go for it, but I would be forearmed.

Usually if the update doesn't work to your expectations, there is a built in way to go back to the previous version of Windows.   Here is one of several help links that gives the instructions to do that.

Note:  You must do this within 30 days of upgrading.

The other thing you should do in case the built in method of going back to the previous version of W10 fails, would be to make a system image of your current drive's status prior to updating to the W10 FCE.

There is a built in Windows utility to do that like there is in W7, but this is not always 100% effective.

I prefer using the free Macrium Reflect system image backup utility at the link below.

https://www.macrium.com/reflectfree?x-ca=blog

You save your image to a portable hard drive, and make a bootable rescue DVD or bootable USB flash drive, which you use to access your system image.

I have much older HP PC's than yours that have not been tested for Windows 10, let alone the FCE and they all work fine on W10 FCE, some even having to use Vista and W7 drivers to get the hardware to work.

Hi

Well I bought this with W10 as the only option.

I have had problems with MS updates, and expect to in the future.

For now it is running and all seems well.

I can get a hardware listing printed out so that drivers etc can be sourced from MS, HP or the maker of the hardware.

I have a recovery option on my car, it will eventually break down, I therefore plan as best I can.

Microsoft have problems with Microsoft updates, they regularly ship, then pull updates.

So please believe them, but do not get bogged down with the gloomy forecast.

"Microsoft Forum editor"?  I have never heard that one. Did you perhaps mean a Moderator instead?

Unfortunately, most of us can look forward to Microsoft Windows 10 issues.  Windows 10 is a work in progress and there will always be issues. I am a Windows Insider and for my desktop PC's OS, I use Insiders editions of Windows.

If you don't see any HP produced Windows 10 specific drivers for your PC, then it is likely that there won't be any produced for it.

If the current Windows 10 drivers are working for you, then don't worry, be happy.

@CF4

"Well I bought this with W10 as the only option."  Can you be more specific? What is the "this" that you refer to?

Hi

It's a

System Model    HP Notebook
System Type    x64-based PC
System SKU    N7K06EA

and I got it from Argos.

None of the documentation mentioned any other OS as an option, however...

My little lappy is very robust, and with Debian, Lubuntu and OpenSuSe on (to complement W10) it the MS issue is less of a worry.

I ran DISM yesterday to clear a nagging "Synaptics" update that has failed repeatedly over the last few weeks, and it's back again today.

Thanks for your post! I was referring to the danish Microsoft Community and thought her job title translated to editor, but now I just ran it through an online translator, and it says moderator!

I'm not really sure which drivers are produced by HP. I can see some that are made by other manufacturers, so maybe the rest are HP?

She was almost demanding that I revert back to Windows 8, but as long as there are no major problems, I'm just staying put. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Thanks for your post. I don't know where you looked in the list of the PCs tested for W10 FCE, but if you look under 'Consumer desktop and All-in-One-PCs', you can find 'HP Pavilion 500-0xx', which I assume includes all the 500- variants.

I installed the FCE when it was released without any problems, which is maybe a good sign as I know that many users had problems with it. I had a problem installing it on a Surface 3, where it had lost a driver somehow, but a new Windows update solved that.

I don't have speakers on the PC, i just use headphones using the headphones jack, and they work perfectly.

After reading the replies I've had so far, I'm not going to take any further action until such a time (hopefully never) that I encounter an unsolvable problem!

You're very welcome.

Yes, I now see the model series listed on the left column of the document.
