Scams and Cons - Snake Oil Salesmen
Scams are similar to a Con --
A scam requires your cooperation to fall victim to the proposed operation.
Scams might include your landing at a false (not-HP) website when looking for help -
You might next click or select an option on that bad website..
There might be sudden pop-up, a "chat" session, or the thief might call you on the phone.
The goal of the scammers is to cheat you out of money, sell you software you do not want or need, and / or being tricked into providing login access to your computer.
Does the scam include updating the firmware on your printer? Unlikely, though scams come in every flavor so it's possible that some clever rat might include this step.
Scams and cons are very common, especially when directed at Printer users seeking help in the wrong places.

Printer Firmware
Printers can - and do - update their firmware.
This is a form of BIOS update, though printers generally name this sort of action a "Firmware Update".
The Firmware update for your printer is listed as of last being released in April 2024.
Reference
HP DeskJet/Ink Advantage 2700 All-in-One Printer series All-in-One Printer series Firmware Update
It's possible the firmware "updated" though without the context of knowing what else (if anything) is going on with the printer would be helpful to guess what happened.

Computer - BIOS Updates
BIOS updates might be run on your Windows computer.
BIOS updates are not "scams" (no money grabbing thieves).
The updates are generally from HP and perhaps offered / installed as part of your Windows Updates.'
The HP Support Assistant might offer BIOS updates.
