On trying to wake my PC from Sleep the screen remained black but from the sound it was busy working. The cursor and blue timer disc appeared intermittently and after about 20 mins the desktop was visible but no response to anything eg HP Support Assistant, Windows button, CTRL/Shift/Esc. Even the clock only updated avery 5 mins or so.
I am new to Win 10, so thought perhaps it was updating, though none of the normal updating messages appeared. I left it in the hope it would complete, but after 6 hours still the same. CTRL/alt/del said unable to display, try Esc or Repower. Unable to do a tidy shutdown I had to press the Power off switch.
Restart was normal. The Norton events log showed high CPU by CommRecovery startimg about 30 mins before my attempt to wake the PC. A full system scan shows no viruses and patches are uptodate. The PC is only a few weeks old.
What can HP do to stop this problem? What can I do to protect myself from it?
Thanks for any help.

Well, I found HPCommRecovery in 'C:\Program Files'. The 'readme.txt' says:
The HP Connection Optimizer is a background service which monitors the status of Ethernet, WiFi and Broadband devices. It will try to recover the device if an error is detected.
I guess that satisfies my curiosity!
So, start the Windows Task Manager, and select and "terminate" that process.

Have you tried running the HP Hardware Diagnostics?
A disk-drive in "imminent failure" status can take a very long time to do Input/Output, thus making your computer almost unresponsive. Reboot, and launch this app.
