Hello,

I have an HP OMEN desktop that came with Windows preinstalled and preactivated when I purchased it. Recently, Windows lost activation and now shows as not activated.

Microsoft support advised me to contact HP to verify whether my device has an OEM Windows license embedded or associated with the serial number, and to see if it can be recovered or reapplied.

I have not replaced the motherboard or storage. I do not have the original product key, as Windows activated automatically out of the box.

I’m looking for guidance on:

  • Confirming whether this OMEN system has an OEM Windows license

  • How to reapply or recover that license if it exists

I can provide the serial number, product name, and product number if needed.

Thank you for your help.

Enter the serial number in the search window at the link below and it should let you know if the PC came with a motherboard with a Windows product key encrypted in the motherboard.

HP PartSurfer

The system board part number will end in -601.

Motherboards that came with FreeDOS (no product key) have a part number than ends in -001

Also you can download and run the free Showkey Plus app from the Microsoft Store.

ShowKeyPlus - Free download and install on Windows | Microsoft Store

It will show you a report that should have an Installed product key and an OEM product key and the version of Windows the OEM key is good for.

If the installed key is different from the OEM key, change the installed key to the OEM key in the PC settings and you should be able to activate Windows that way.
