A friend gave my son an old PC HP P2 We tried to turn it on and receive an error: No Boot Drive Detected. Not sure what that is. However I know it’s an older model and he wants to do some online gaming with friends. I figured I could change the HDD to a SSD and maybe upgrade the RAM. It comes with 6GB of RAM and a AMD E2-1800 processor. My questions are:
1. Can it be upgraded?
2. Is it worth trying?
3 Is there a better lower cost way to get him a desktop.
Thanks for the help.

That model PC would not be a very good performing PC for gaming.
It has a weak processor, and you can't install a graphics card.
The PC supports a maximum of 2 x 4 GB of memory.
It came with Windows 8 64 bit from HP.
You can install W8.1 for free but you should ask whoever gave the PC to your son if it had been previously upgraded to W10.
If it was, then you can reinstall W10 for free.
You can pick up one of the HP memory chips that are listed in the parts list for cheap and remove and replace the 2 GB chip with it.
HP Original 4GB PC3-12800 Desktop UDIMM 655410-150 (various manuf.) FREE SHIP | eBay
The PC came with a 1 TB drive so if your son doesn't need that much space, you can buy a 500 GB SSD--$57

Then you need a 3.5" to 2.5" adapter.
This adapter is nice because it is the same size as the 3.5" drive and would install where the 3.5" drive is now. $8.00
As far as the existing drive, your son's friend may have wiped the OS from the drive so you get the 'Boot device not found' error.
Before putting any money into it, I recommend you see if you can get Windows installed on the mechanical hard drive, fire up the PC and see how it works as is.
It you think it is worth putting $75 into it afterward, it will only make it better.
