Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Accidentally bumped my old HP PC, it turned off and began a cycle of trying to turn on with the fans spinning for less than a second and the green light dimming to almost nothing when the fans stopped. Tried replugging in the power cord, visually inspecting the inside (without touching), and bumping it again as a last resort. Is the power supply unit ruined or is something else wrong? Any way to fix it without buying new parts or is the PC (or a part like the psu) toast?

Hi @dmg6,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

I appreciate your efforts in trying to resolve this issue by performing the necessary troubleshooting steps.

If your HP PC is stuck in a start-and-stop loop with the green light dimming, it could indicate a hardware or software issue. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the problem:

Check Power Supply: Ensure that the power cable is securely connected to the PC and the power outlet. Try using a different power outlet or power cable to rule out any issues with the power supply.

Reset the PC: Turn off the PC completely and unplug it from the power source. Wait for a few minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes resolve temporary issues.

Check for Overheating: Ensure that the PC is not overheating. Check the fans and vents for dust buildup and make sure they are clean and free of obstructions.

Disconnect External Devices: Disconnect any external devices such as USB drives, printers, or external monitors. Sometimes, a malfunctioning external device can cause the PC to enter a start and stop loop.

Update BIOS: Check if there is a BIOS update available for your PC on the HP website. Updating the BIOS can sometimes resolve hardware compatibility issues.

Hardware Diagnostics: Run hardware diagnostics to check for any hardware issues. Most HP PCs have built-in diagnostics tools that you can access during startup.

If none of the above steps work, it may indicate a more serious hardware issue. In this case, it's best to contact HP phone support.
