HP Pavilion 690-0020
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello, I just recently purchased  a Pavilion 690-0020, and now I realize I want to merge over to an SSD, while if possible, keeping my HDD for extra/non important storage. I have a Samsung 850 Evo (I'm pretty sure) I know it is a Samsung Evo and the storage is either 250gb or 260gb. I don't have anything installed on it right now. I am trying to figure out how to move everything from my HDD to the SSD. I have tried booting up the computer using a usb stick, however it won't boot. (I tried using Linux on the usb stick and turning off secure boot and the usb stick shows up, but it won't actually boot up, it just says something like "attempting repairs" and boots up the pc using the HDD.)

So here are my 3 main questions

1. Does the motherboard just not support booting through a USB stick?

2. Do I just need to boot it using a DVD with an OS installed on it?

3. If it is a problem with the motherboard not supporting it, can I just buy another motherboard that supports it and move the files from the HDD to the SSD by booting it though a usb stick?

Thanks in advance!

@Cudds_

The following link shows its specs

     https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c05970262

It actually has

  • Expansion Slots:
    • One PCIe x16 slot
    • One PCIe x4 slot
    • One M.2 socket 1, key A
    • One M.2 socket 3, key M

You can use M.2 socket 3 slot to add an M.2 NVMe drive and move Windows 10 to it as boot drive. The Samsung 970 EVO is the right choice, the 850 drive MAY work.

1. Does the motherboard just not support booting through a USB stick?

Sorry I don't know your question. Normally machines will boot from a bootable USB

2. Do I just need to boot it using a DVD with an OS installed on it?

   Ditto

3. ... it and move the files from the HDD to the SSD by booting it though a usb stick?

   This won't work

Normally we have to do

1. Clone or image the HDD to SSD,

2. Remove HDD and run on SSD for few days or a week to be sure we have a working machine,

3. Format old HDD and put it back for storage.

Regards.

Hey sorry I may have not worded my question correctly, so basically, I'm just trying to figure out how to move windows from the HDD to the SSD. My brother told me that I have to boot it through a usb stick or something similar, then move the windows 10 that is on my hard drive to the solid state drive. Also the SSD isn't an m.2 one, it is plugged in through a sata cable. So yeah I basically just need to figure out how to move the stuff on the hard drive to the solid state drive. Would I be able to just plug both into someone else's computer and boot it through whatever OS they have and then just move the stuff from my HDD to my SSD? Like I basically just can't get it to boot using anything but the hard drive.
