My HP Pavillion Desktop, barely two years old, has frozen up twice in the last 24 hours.  It operates normally after a reboot.  How do I troubleshoot whatever issue is causing this?

Hi @Curmudgeon10,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand that experiencing freezes on your HP Pavilion Desktop can be frustrating. Here's a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot the issue:

Check for Software Updates:

  • Ensure your system is updated to the latest version of Windows 11.

  • Go to Settings > Windows Update and check for any pending updates.

Update Drivers:

  • Visit the HP Support Page to check if there are any updated drivers for your model.

  • You can also use Device Manager to update drivers:

    • Right-click on the Start button and select Device Manager.

    • Check each category for devices with drivers that need updates.

Run the Windows Memory Diagnostic:

  • Use Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog.

  • Type mdsched.exe and press Enter.

  • Choose to restart now and check for problems, or select to check on the next restart.

Check Task Manager:

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.

  • Look for any applications using excessive CPU or Memory resources.

Check Security Software:

  • Ensure your anti-virus and security software are updated and running a full scan for malware or viruses.

System File Checker:

  • Open Command Prompt as an administrator.

  • Type sfc /scannow and press Enter. This will check and repair any corrupted system files.

Check Hard Disk Health:

  • Use the CHKDSK utility to scan for disk errors:

    • Open Command Prompt as an administrator.

    • Type chkdsk /f and press Enter. You may need to restart your computer for it to run.

Event Viewer Logs:

  • Access Event Viewer by typing eventvwr in the Run dialog (Windows Key + R).

  • Look under the Windows Logs > System for error messages that coincide with the time of the freezes.

HP PC Hardware Diagnostics:

  • HP provides PC diagnostics tools that can check the hardware components.

  • These can be downloaded from the Official HP® Support if not already installed.

I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.
